Major issues at wits end with Emby

As the title says I am at wirs end with Emby this has simply been the biggest failure for me and I am basically done with it, even though I have been paying in Emby Premiere for Live TV, it is just a horrid experience.

  • Scheduled recordings simply don't record tbey are marked to record they simply just don't record
  • A lot of the time I can't even play live TV, simply spins and never loads anything
  • TIming of recordings is all out of sync if something does record it seems most of the time its only half of the show
  • TV Listing channels have the wrong images
  • If I do want to record something I have to click the record button twice and then it seems to record but not scheduled and when I click the record
button twice it starts recording and then the spinner just spins

The recordings is the biggest issue and my wife has simply told me she wont' use it anymore, I simply don't know what to check or if I have setup something wrong.

There is something seriously wrong there.

First what device are you using for live tv ?

You will need to attach server log just remove the private info.

Attached all of my log files.

My hardware is a HDHomeRun Quad Tuner, I have NextPVR installed but the service is currently disabled, I'm working today and away volunteering all day Saturday but was intending to do some more investigation on Sunday so happy for any suggestions before then if there is anything you find in the logs.

Just to be clear, programs not recording when scheduled, I generally can't watch LiveTV from the other WIndows device in the bedroom, sometimes I can, sometimes I can't. To my initial looking it looks like some how there doesn't seem to be 4 tuners available from the HD HomeRun, not sure and I don't know what to look for in the logs.

Everytime I look at the HDHomeRun device it is always green and from the admin of it, it's saying everything is ok.

I just want and had a quick check of my HDHomeRun and I saw that it says 2 tuners are in use, even though I have nothing playing at the moment from any device.

I would remove nextpvr from your system or make sure it is off and remove nextpvr plugin and go from there.

So remove the nextpvr plugin from where ? You mean in Kodi ? Should I remove Kodi as well ?

Just checked the tuners again tonight and one of the tuners so it is occupied recording something I have never watched or set to record ?

Is it possible my Emby is being controlled externally ? How do I tell what set a recording or has requested a tuner to be used ?

Hi, yes can we please look at an example? We're happy to help. Thanks.

I've attached my log files, were you asking for something else in particular to look at ?

I just had a look at your logs please remove the private info you have your ice tv details.

The reason your recordings are failing is that all your tuners are in use.

Can you also attach log from hdhr to see what devices are using the tuner.

When you provide logs don’t zip them just attach the latest emby log when something doesn’t work as it should. Emby doesn’t have conflict management yet so you could be recording on more channels than you have available.

You said you have nextpvr I assume you have the software stand alone.

Step by step and your issue will be solved.

You can see what is scheduled and what is recording if you go to live tv -> schedule. It can’t be controlled externally unless you have given someone access on the server if you go to users in server management how many users are there.

I have uninstalled Kodi and also NextPVR, so going to monitor it over the next few days, is there any reason why I would need to multiple click to record or set series recording, is there something which indicates it won't record anything but new episodes that I am not aware of ?

I also have the HDHR Quatro. There are times (not super often) when Emby will lock up a tuner for whatever reason. The last time I was watching remotely from a Shield TV, Direct Playing. It was still locked up to that channel even the next day after I was done watching it. It was not showing up in the Dashboard of Emby, however, just on the HDHR Status page.

I leave a tab open on my desktop browser for the HDHR Tuner Status page and if I ever notice a lock, I reboot the Emby server. It then frees up the tuner.

It should be just a single click to record a series. Can you attach screenshots ?

There were issues that it doesn’t release the tuners if you don’t exit properly. They should be fixed by now if you are having issue best to report so it can be fixed.

When I go to record something click on the item on the tv guide in this example to show you I clicked on The Big Bang Theory and press series recording and that is it once you press it you will see settings but don't need to touch any of those settings if you don't want to I don't. Once you pressed it your screen should look like picture 2 and finally all your series recording are in series tab under live tv and here you can also change settings for new/repeats and lots of other settings .

I would also change the pre and post so you don't have to change it all the time.

Sorry for being away so long on this thread, the post above is pretty much everything that we see and this works fine, however, it literally just doesn't record, it simply won't record the series, I don't have only record new episodes set, so I'm expecting it to record everything that is part of that series but it doesn't. What my wife has to do is go into the recordings, and toggle series recording 3 times, off, record series and it will start recording but she has to do every night.

I don't know if it is a tuner issue, as in not enough tuners but we have 4 and she doesn't watch anything live, just records.

Is there someway to tell if there are simply no tuners available ? Because I have to look in the logs for that, would be nice if it said there are no tuners available instead of having to trawl through logs

Where do I report it ? can I raise a support ticket via Emby Premiere ?

Sure, just tonight I got home and she had set "New Tricks" to series record but it didn't record, simple as that, no notification from Emby, the recording icon is just gray, but no recording is taking place, so she misses out on the show and I get the "not positive" feedback.

So I was just having a play around and trying spot something and I found something which might be an issue, so when I went into Series there was about 10 different "Series" recordings set for NCIS, some for the same channel, some for different channels, so I removed them all and I set up 1 new series and changed it to "All channels" so I am going to see how this goes and if it records, tomorrow night.

There are multiples of lots of different shows, so if this works I am going to go through and do the same thing with the other series recordings.

SO what has happened now is that it is set to record 2 NCIS because it is being played on 2 channels, so will this use 1 tuner or 2 tuners because they are on the same frequency will it count as 1 tuner ?

Hi, the gray icon means that the program is part of a series that has a series recording setup, but that particular episode is not scheduled to record, so that's why it is gray. The reason why it wouldn't record would be based on your series recording settings. How have you configured the series?

But yes it is simpler to have one series recording for NCIS, rather than having multiple for the same show.

If it's two channels, it will use two tuners.

The series is set up correctly, all episodes on all channels, things are not being recorded because tuners are being used by channels that are not being used by us, there is something very wrong going on here. I check the Tuner Status and it is saying 3 tuners are being used by channels which are NOT being used for example. It says Tuner 0,1,3 are being used by programs that are not being watched or watched since last night, so what is going on here ?

What can I search for in the logs which would indicate something requested a tuner to being recording, it has the resource lock set as the ip of the pc that Emby Server is running on, so I assume that means it came from that computer ? Do the logs log what channel was requested is there a string I can search for that indicates a request to use a tuner ?

However, something is causing tuners to be used and not released and I have no idea as I don't know what to look for in the logs or I cannot find ANYTHING in the logs which indicate the initiation of request to use for example tuner 2 on a channel we do not watch or record on.

Going to ask a very serious question, is it possible for god knows what reason that something external to my network is hacking in a tell the HDHomeRun to use tuners ? Is there anyway to find out ?

Ok so I found this in the HDHomeRun logs.

20191118-10:35:29 Tuner: tuner2 tuning 92 9Gem Melbourne (t7qam64:192MHz-1078)
20191118-10:35:30 Tuner: tuner3 tuning 92 9Gem Melbourne (t7qam64:192MHz-1078)

These are 2 tuners that are being flagged as being in use and I have no idea what is requesting this tuning to happen. That time is local time I assume because if I try to convert that from UTC to Local it is in the future.

I don't see anything in the Emby server log request that channel tuning at that time.

Are you sure you haven't been hacked, and someone else isn't using your tuners? In the HDHR logs, does it show the IPs that are accessing the tuners?

If you go here in your web browser on the LAN:   http://***YOUR HDHR IP HERE***/tuners.html

you can view the status of your tuners real-time.
