Download bitrate settings

Hi,

I did my first downloads Today and noticed that the setting for bitrate works a bit oddly. That is, I downloaded an episode with original bitrate of 4.8Mbit/s with the setting of 8Mbit/s. It thought that the setting is to limit the maximum bitrate but instead my Emby server started transcoding the episode to a higher bitrate from 4.8Mbit/s.

How can I acchieve this: "Use the original bitrate but if it is over 8 MBit/s, transcode to 8 Mbit/s and download after that"? That is, I do not want the Emby server to transcode to a higher bitrate than the original but I want to limit the maximum bitrate to a certain limit.

Thank you for the info!

Hi, in most cases it will stay under the limit of your original quality of 4.8 mbps, but sometimes it will allow a higher value.

For example, if the source video is hevc and we're converting to h264, then h264 will need a higher bitrate in order to achieve the same quality. Does that answer your question?

Sorry to get back on this so late. I have been travelling and forgot about this.

Anyway, my aim is to transfer/download the files to my phone exactly the same that they are in the server. That is, no transcode needed as the files are in h.264 and my phone supports them. How can I achieve this? I tried it with setting the bitrate limit way higher (i.e. 8Mbit/s) than the bitrate of the video (4.8 MBit/s). However, this initiated a transcode and it seemed that Emby started to transcode the video file to a higher bitrate than the original file. I would like to prevent this to happen as I only would like to transfer the file as it is.

We'd have to look at an example of that, but you can also select original at the point of initiating the download.

Thank you. The "original" was just what I was looking for. If my memory serves me right, it wasn't an option when I first tried way back. Anyway, problem solved for me.
