Why subtitles on my TV is so small...

Hello. I'm new Emby user. Until now i was a Plex user, but recently i decide to switch to Emby. (different reasons)

I pay for one month Emby Premiere to try everything. And everything is OK. I like very much that almost everything on server, LG tv app and Android app is translated to Bulgarian, movie names and descriptions too. (my English is not good).

I very like and option that tell me why some movies are transcoded, and that Emby showing what kind of transcoding use (Quick Sync in my case). For one movie now i understand that the reason for transcoding is subtitle file, when I try another subtitle file Emby start direct play to my TV.

And now I'm thinking to buy a Lifetime premiere.

BUT.... Why on most used device at my home -LG TV subtitles is so tiny... And there is no option to enlarge. Or may be I cant find it?

Hi, what model lg and version of webos? What format subtitles? Have you explored the subtitle options in the app?

My LG TV is 55SK8500 webos 4.1. On Emby app in settings tab I have 4 options - Display, Home screen, playback, subtitles. On subtitles tab there is 3 options - prefered language(any language), subtitle mode(always play subtitles) and burn subtitles(automatic) but no subtitle size.

My subtitles is *.srt file

If your subtitles are .srt and the filename exactly matches the movie name AND there are no DEFAULT subtitles in the container (MKV etc) - then transcoding should not be necessary anyway.    Personally, I always strip out any internal subtitle files and just use the external .srt one as that seems to be the most reliable subtitle method for direct playing for all my devices incl LG.

ps - I can't help on the size - as I've never needed to change the size - on my LG C8, they appear to be a good size - if anything a little too big .. haha.

Yes now I understand about subtitle format. Only the size is problem now. They are too small for me. If I'm little far away from TV i read, but it is hard. There are 2 pictures with subtitles one from Emby and one from Plex. Now I can't stop using Plex. :( My two kids (4 years old twins) are now learning to read. When the subtitles is biger is a lot easy for them.First picture is from Emby

I just checked this myself - there is definitely no setting to change the size of subtitles in the LG App ...

The only other possibility is to try .ssa or .ass format subtitles - as they DO allow you to specify colour/location etc - so you may be able to change the size too - I'll have a look when I get 5 minutes ..

Until the app is updated - you can specify size if using .ass subtitles

Easy to convert using ffmpeg -a <input.srt> <output.ass>

Modify the size to your liking by editing the size in the heading section of the file  ... this extreme example is 60 point .. haha

I converted few of my .srt subtitles to .ssa. Very easy. I change font size to 30 and now they are bigger on my LG TV. But now every time Emby transcodes my movies and TV shows. Reason for that is subtitles - not supported subtitle file format.

Your version of WebOS on this TV says it supports these types of subtitles, (same WebOS as my TV) so I know this works  ;)

Are you sure Emby is using the EXTERNAL .ssa (or .ass) subtitle file and not any possible internal PGS subtitles ?

Using mediainfo or Emby 'Media Info' at the bottom of the detail page - does it just show your external subtitles you created.  If no, then are any of the other subtitles set with Default = Yes flag ?

If any of the other subtitles have Default = Yes, then Emby will ignore the external subtitle and try to use the internal Default one - which likely results in the transcode ...  Fix is to remove the internal subtitles or remove the Default flag ..

You could also try renaming the .ass/.ssa subtitle <name>.forced.ass - that way Emby should be forced to use it - but it will then ALWAYS be on during playback unless you manually turn it off  when play begins.

Yes subtitles are external I'm sure about that. I use srt=no transcoding, i converted (https://gotranscript.com/subtitle-converter) same srt to ssa, and delete srt from folder. When i play this tvshow on lg tv it shows subtitle like "(ssa)" but start transcoding and for reason for transcoding is "unsupported subtitle format"

For now I will use Plex and may be only on movies that I have problems with Plex I will use Emby untill Emby on LG webos don't have option for subtitle size.

It is strange that Emby have this options for all other devices but not for LG.

I have no desire, skill and time to play around with these subtitle settings.

Аnd I'm already getting nervous and angry.

You just need to show if you are using external or internal subtitles - see below.

if your media info shows the same (ie external ONLY) then I'm not sure why it is transcoding - if it shows OTHER subtitles as well (internal) then that is why it is transcoding, and ignoring your external re-sized subs.

if you could do a screen grab of the Media Info, like I have done, then that would help us try to solve this one for you.

Ok let see.... I have one episode of tv show chicago fire. English language. When i play it there is NO subtitles, there are no internal subtitles. Then from opensubtitles I download srt subtitle for this episode and I have tiny bulgarian subtitles and NO transcoding. I converted srt to ssa, change font to 30 (it was 20). Now i have BIG subtitles when i play this episode but emby transcodes. I think that I messed something i change font size on 20 again. When I play episode subtitles are small but emby still transcode. I delete this ass file and use again srt. Subtitle are small and NO transcoding. I dont know what hapening, but is clear that I use external ssa subtitles (they change size when I change font size from 20 to 30).

I did't digg more in that because anyway even this solution are working for some people (but not work for me ) I will not start to convert all my subtitles more than 2000 files.

I will wait to have a option to increase subtitle size on LG TV Emby client app. For now Emby will be my second server app, and I will use it only when Plex have problems with some of my media. 3 hours ago i shut down emby server app.

Sorry for my bad English, it is very hard for me to write on English and explain everything. I just expect to pay and things to work.... Things like -" ok this will work BUT you first need to to be shure for this, then for that, after that you will convert this.... And....' - It's just not for me...

ok I fully understand - and your English is great by the way.    From what you describe above, it does indeed seem like you just have external subtitles and it 'should' work fine.    I guess you just need to wait for the LG App to include the subtitle size option and then re-test.

I updated my Emby app on LG Tv and I saw new settings for subtitles. Yeeeeeees. I changed font to BIG, start playing a movie and..... Nothing. The subtitles are still the same. Small.

I restarted Emby app, TV, Emby server. And nothing. This subtitle settings dont work. Why is that.

I don;t have an issue with the subtitle size - but agree this does not work, out of curiosity I tried on the the latest LG App (1.0.19) & Latest Emby Beta Release (4.3.0.15) and it totally ignores the subtitle settings.  This is on an LG C8/Latest Firmware (f/w : Version 05.10.20).

.ass/.ssa sizing still work fine, so I will continue to use those if I have need to change colour/intensity (for HDR) or sizing but for me, the current .SRT size is fine anyway (on a 65" Display).

Thanks.
