Hardware for transcoding

Hey guys 1st post in these forums :)

Just purchased a new CPU

Intel Xeon Processor E5-4650 v2

Possibly 48Gb Ram but atm 24gb

550W PSU

40Tb HDD (total)

and was wondering what sort of gpu would be best suited to be added?

I am currently running an old Radeon 280x however I am in a position to upgrade the GPU however I have not seen any recommendations regarding AMD cards but willing to listen to any sort of feedback as I was tempted for an RTX to future proof myself which is the most likely option but as I am new to upgrading my server after so long would like to hear any feedback from yourselves :)

I'm using a Threadripper, so it's much better than a Xeon. If you're looking to transcode 4k stuff, you'll need a GPU for that. Which one you buy is largely dependant on your budget.

been looking at a 2060/2070 but potentially looking at taking my 1080ti out of my gaming system and purchasing a 2080ti or 2080 :)

any advice from yourself will be helpful

Any one of those cards will work well. The question you need to worry about is how many simultaneous transcodes you require. Those can only handle two, but there is a patch to unlock them. Several of these guys have done that.
