It's not worth using cutting edge stuff, if you don't bleed a little.

Both Jay and Linus are totally hating on Intel lol

Definitely well deserved!
Looking forward for your report about transcoding with your new setup. :-)

Just upgraded to the 3700x, so happy to have moved on from QSV transcodes to straight CPU set at slow with an 18 CRF. It just tears through it when remote users start something up...

Hey @cybergrimes, how many transcodes can you get out of the CPU?  Are you using any GPU along side this for decode?

I've been trying to wring out as much info as I can on QSV on new intel chips, but it seems like I'm not getting any traction.

I don't need CRF of 18, 23 is perfectly fine for my needs, but I need to transcode MPEG2 to h.264.

Did you see these posts in that thread I gave you?

They were with a 1st gen Ryzen, not a Threadripper.

I am transcoding for remote users only, nobody has a bitrate setting above 5-6 Mbps per stream. I only have a few friends & family using this so I can't speak for max streams very well, especially at these bitrates.

To attempt to help some I fired up a 1080i MPEG2 recording (13 Mbps bitrate file), without any bitrate limit on the transcode, it's sustaining around 217 fps. It took around 8:30 of playing a 1 hour recording to get a full buffer.

I turned on two of these at once, one is hanging around 143 fps and the other around 75 fps. I would imagine with throttling turned on you could get quite a few streams going pretty easily.

No GPU assistance with decoding.

edit, also would definitely look @Doofus other posts. He's put in some actual work on determining this previously

I'm looking at the gen3 ryzen specifically and you posted that 3700x.  My source is an HDHomeRun 1080i MPEG2 very similar to your source.  60fps.   Deinterlacing is part of my performance issue I think.  217fps/60 is <4 transcodes.

I think at a minimum I'll need a graphics card that can do hardware deinterlacing.  I believe that is my current encoding bottleneck.

I have an i3-8109U and quicksync with the MPEG2 stream in and 1080p out is between 15 and 22fps.  software decode and encode is about 35% CPU per so I'll max out at 3 on that (dual core) 8th gen CPU.

The problem with quicksync as the 'deinterlacer' is that you are stuck using quicksync for decode and encode, you can't just decode and then software encode.

So, I believe I really am 'stuck' going with a GPU because of that MPEG2 interlaced input.  If that's the case, why not just go full on and do a 1060TI.

I did. The only thing I can see is the 1700 post, but he's stated a 10Mbps upload so 11 transcodes at <1Mbps seems to be every effort at making an unrealistic test.

1080p transcodes need to be somewhere at or above 3Mbps, 720p at 1.5Mbps is pretty rough.

Right. but you're looking for an identical test to what you're looking for, and you're not going to find it. The test I performed was within my own network. The 3rd gen Ryzen performs better than my 1st gen Threadripper.

You're just going to have make an informed guess.

@Doofus

Am I even going to need the GTX 1060 I just procured from you with the 3700x I'm going to build?

Possibly not, you'll have to let us know. Always good to have it as a backup. Maybe you could mix 'n' match. I'm curious to see your results.

It out performs my TR but has less cores, so it'll be interesting.

I should probable start without the GPU and see how it goes then put it in and test again..

I got the 3950x the day it came out. Got lucky. I should do a test with it. From using it so far I can tell it’s way faster then the 1800x it replaced.
