Emby seems very slow on my new DS118

I don't know if this is just me or not, although it could well be :)

I took delivery of a brand new Synology DS118 yesterday along with a 4TB Ironwolf hard drive.   Spent most of yesterday getting it all set up and copying all of my media over.   Installed Emby successfully and started setting that up as well and as i've been going along, it seems very slow.

There isn't one specific thing that's slow, it just all seems to drag.   I did eventually get all of my libraries created and then i installed the emby for android tv app on my android box so i could access the content and that also seems to take a while.

Also with that, if i select the movie tab, i have gaps all over the screen where it seems to load some of the cover art but not others.  If i click on the 'television' library tab and select a random tv show, it takes around 20-25 seconds to fully load up all of the cover art, backgrounds and other graphics.   Surely this is too long ?

My router is a 100mb fibre broadband connection, but i'm wondering if there's an issue with that ?.

I've run the security checks on the drive and, aside from sharing the 'video' folder for access, everything is fine.   When i look at the control panel, the CPU usage is the usual 1% and there's nothing unusual that would suggest a DDOS attack or anything like that, even though i've enabled the DDOS protection.

I appreciate this might be a 'how long is a piece of string' question but are there things I could check for that might be jamming emby up ?  Thanks.

Just to give you another example of something that's just happened.   I clicked on the "Movies" tab in my media and clicked on the film "The Mask" and It took around 30 seconds to fully populate the cast thumbnails.

I clicked the 'Home' icon and all I got was the 'My Media' toolbar at the top of the home page as i have it set to "My Media (Small)".

And nothing happened - nothing else loaded.   The page itself wasn't still loading either so i waited about 20 seconds and clicked 'Refresh' and - eventually- the page fully loaded, again after about 20-25 seconds.

Then i clicked on the "Sonarr" link that I saved to access the Sonarr app and it just did nothing again for a full 30 odd seconds - maybe longer.

Many images are downloaded on demand, so if we're just talking the cast it is probably just a matter of downloading the cast thumbnails from their internet sources. This only happens the first time.

I did wonder if this might be the case actually, but then there's still some niggling doubt in my mind because the nas in general seems to be slow in accessing packages and other things.

It might not necessarily be emby I suppose - it might be another aspect I haven't figured out yet.

The DS118 is a Realtek processor and not an Intel like mine so right off the bat it will be slower.  Also, from what James says VA-API really only works on Intel processors so transcoding would be slower without

That's interesting.

I had a DS116 beforehand which ran fine - no problems with that at all and that was a marvell armada dual core processor.

You'd think a Quad Core, as the DS118 has, would be quicker ..

This is still running like a dog.   I've just clicked on my "Movies" tab and it's loading up each cover art for the initial lot of films, but then it just loads the default white film icon for the others as it's ticking through them.

So I exit out of the movies section and try another section and i click on it and nothing happens.   I click on it a few times and nothing happens.

So I go back to the movies section and i click on it.   It goes into the movies section but it then hangs and i have to reboot the box.

It's almost like it loads the section but then something happens with the image caching that grinds it all to a halt.

As another example, i've just gone into the favourites section in the movies and it's loaded 3 lots of cover art and nothing else.   I came back out of the favourites, counted to five and then selected it again and then it loaded up the cover art for all of the films.

That's interesting.   Would checking "download images in advance" in the library setup also cause an issue ?

It's something I've always done out of habit i suppose.

Just to clarify what i've tried, i actually did a full re-format and reset to factory settings last night after Synology support got back to me saying there were no issues with the drive itself but that DSM was doing something "not normal".

They pointed out some of the packages i'd tried installing - sickgear and a few variants mainly - and said that sometimes they can leave residual files that might cause DSM to act up so I just blitzed everything and started again.

I also reset the libraries so that they didn't download images in advace and still emby ran like treacle.

I decided to give Kodi another go and it worked flawlessly.   No delays or problems scanning for metadata and downloading so unfortunately i'm going to have to go back to that for now.

Yes of course. Did you not read the help text underneath the option?

I've also recently tried Plex as well and that didn't have an issue - no lags or delays in searching the movie database as well.   It only seems to be Emby that's the problem at the moment.

How large is this library?  My movie is fairly small and library searches and scrolls are very fast, but my music library is ~90K songs and can take awhile.

I've only got 163 films and 48 series 'box sets' so not that many.   I don't use my music collection through emby though.

Hey, sorry for the delay.   had a few pc problems.    i've just run emby and added just my movies, nothing else.

I left it for a few hours while I went out, just in case it had any image caching or processing to do and when i got back this afternoon, i sat down and loaded up the front end.  Clicked on "Movies" and was immediately presented with this ..

5d6e871cba4a5_first_page.jpg

It took a good 45-60 seconds to populate the images.

I then clicked on the three buttons on the first film intending to use the "Identify" function to change the movie poster.  A minute later, nothing had happened.  I clicked on the three buttons on the next film along in the list.   Another minute elapsed and nothing happened - and still nothing from the first film either.

I then started looking in the menus for something else and about 2 minutes after that, both submenus popped up at once.

I've attached the emby server log as requested but i've got all the other logs available if you'd like to see them.   Thanks :)

By default, images are downloaded on the fly, so i think you just have to wait for them to fill in on that screen. You can adjust your library settings to have them download in advance, at the cost of causing library scans to take considerably longer.

Yes, as I said upthread, I always used to check "Download Images in Advance" but I didn't do it this time.

On a 100mb fibre connection, I'd expect the images to be populated at least a tiny bit faster though.

Interesting ..

I was just using it to update my movie posters and it was flying.   Images loading super fast and navigation was fast as well.   I clicked on the download icon for the one movie poster I wanted for a particular movie and clicked "back".   I went back to the landing page and the poster didn't immediately update, but I didn't think anything of it and clicked the three buttons for the next movie to get the menu up to do that one.

Went to the images page and nothing - all blank boxes.

Clicked back and then clicked the three buttons again and nothing.   So clicked the home icon and it took around 80-90 seconds of the spinning line before it actually reloaded the page.

#edit

And now i'm back doing what I was doing and updating the movie posters and it flies again, but then it hits some films that seemingly take a little longer to query and the "logjam" happens again.

I doubt this will make much difference, but i'll detail what has just happened.

Having spent the best part of a week re-doing all of my movie libraries and setting everything up with the movie posters, marking everything that's been watched e.t.c.. I was finally ready to install Emby for Android (which i've paid for previously) on my Android TV Box.

Signed in and it loaded up.   I selected one of my movie libraries and was presented with a screen full of blank boxes for each movie with the cinema reel icon.  So i waited, assuming that it would eventually populate them.

And I waited.

And I waited.

So I eventually used the back button on the remote to come back to the home screen and I tried re-entering the library and I was met with one blank box with the 'buffering' rotating icon on it.

So i waited for that.

And I waited.

And I waited some more.

Eventually I rebooted the box.

Went back in and selected that same library again and this time got a grey screen.   Everything was blank, but the screen was just grey.   So I waited for that.

And, shock, horror, eventually it re-appeared with all of the movie posters correctly populated, so I decided to select a film to watch.   I had the spinning circle on the screen for a good five minutes and then it just dropped back to the landing page for the movie without doing anything.

Pressed 'play' again and .. nothing.   Doesn't do a thing.

I'm starting to wonder if this is more to do with issues with my router and my synology than anything emby has actually done.

How does the web app compare?
