Resolved. My DNS messed up some things and Emby was not able to communicate to the internet..

Huh? Wrong thread?

Hi, new here.

I'm assuming the Emby For Synology NAS is a 64 bit server? Here: https://emby.media/nas-server.html

Also, I assume the "Community" tab will show up once you enter in the Emby Name/Location and to trust the Emby package repository? I cannot check right now.

Hi, yes it is 64-bit, and yes you are correct.

Hi, yes it is 64-bit, and yes you are correct.

Someone else is telling me that I need to install a docker package on the NAS? Then the Emby docker. Uh, I don't think this is what is required and he's confused? Or am I the person whose confused? If it's gonna be this convoluted I may just pass on Emby.

You can use Docker also, but I think the easiest way is to just add the repository to PC

https://emby.media/nas-server.html

Yeah, I dunno what the docker thing is about. If I install it from the repository am I going to have all of the same functionality as the docker route? And I don't understand this from the docker page: "Official Emby Media Server (amd64)"

AMD64?.....

That just means 64-bit. You don't need to worry about 64-bit or not 64-bit. If you just follow the Synology instructions it will lead you to the right package for your model. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

A few questions if you wouldn't mind. Much appreciated.

1.) Why would you need to grant the Emby Server user Read/Write access? Why not just read? Or does it need write access for metadata?

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Synology-:-Setting-Up-Your-Media-Library-Share

2.) Is there a quick guide showing how to transfer files from PC to NAS? Isn't the transfer speed kinda slow using your LAN? I mean, I'd think plugging in an external USB 3.0 HDD to the NAS would be faster than transferring from an internal desktop drive? I'm curious because I do have an external enclosure I could just use and plug directly to the NAS.

3.) I don't really get the "path substitution" part.

Read is fine if you don't care about saving metadata inside the media folders.

@@FrostByte do you know of one?

1.) Well, I do care about metadata. I'm just not sure how it works with Emby. If it didn't save the metadata to the folders, uh, where else would it save?

2.) I set up my network share in Windows 10 Pro to my NAS, the transfer speed is not bad. 110 MB/s. Maybe later on I'll test the USB 3.0 plugged into my NAS. Maybe it'll be faster, maybe it won't.

3.) In this guide: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Synology-:-Setting-Up-Your-Media-Library-Share

Step 8: "Configure path substitution to enable clients to direct play media, pay attention to the trailing slashes!" I just don't really understand that step. Maybe when I get to it, it'll make more sense.

The only guide I'm aware of for transferring files from Windows to Synology.  Basically, it's probably just saying to do what he's already doing.

Edit: sorry forgot the link

1.) For the "Metadata savers" option, if I already have some .Nfo's, but others are missing, what happens with this option? It just creates the missing .Nfo files for the content I have?

2.) For "Save artwork into media folders", what happens to the artwork if I opt to not save it to media folders? Same goes for "Enable thumbnail image creation / save thumbnail images into media folders".

3.) "Subtitle Downloads" -- same as with the .Nfo's. If I already have some subtitles, this option won't replace the subtitles I already have, it'll just generate the missing subtitles for other content?

I assume there's a guide some where explaining all of this.

I've been working on the installation page, but looks like that media library setup page could use a little tweaking also to make it a little easier to understand.

Step 8 is just translating the path in the top box which your Synology understands (because Emby is now on your NAS) to the shared path where your media is which clients like Emby Theater understand.

The first box is the volume on the NAS where the media is plus the shared folder you created in step 2  ex.  //VOLUME-NAME/FOLDER-NAME/

There is a note at the top of the page that the JFK in the examples is whatever you called your Synology NAS when you set it up before you installed Emby.  So the second box contains your server name plus the share name again to your media which you created in step 2.     ex.  \\SERVER-NAME\SHARE-NAME  (This is the same path you use when connecting to your shares from Windows)

Ok, I see from github "Path Substitution" is now called: "Optional Network Paths". Whew, this is confusing lol and I'm not exactly new to media players. I guess I'll take another stab at figuring this out after a good nights rest.

Yes, I think that picture may need to be updated and may be needed per library now (I've taken server down so will check later)

Hmm, is there a way to see the exact file name of a movie on Emby for Nvidia Shield?

When I load Emby on my Synology NAS I see a bunch of info that I don't see on the Shield Emby app such as: Media Info and below that path: along with the exact file name.

1.) Hmm, where do I edit "Optional Network Paths" or aka the now renamed "Path Substitution".

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Optional-Network-Paths

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Synology-:-Setting-Up-Your-Media-Library-Share

Will this even make a difference if I'm using a NAS (where my library is stored) and I'm using the Emby app on my Shield? Granted, I will be using the server remotely at some point.

If I go to manage server --> Library --> Manage Library --> I only see the path I already set: /volume1/Media/movies

I know my Synology NAS server name. So hypothetically, if my server name was: ASDF, I'd just type \\ASDF\\Media\Movies ?

2.) Also, where do you find the name of your/my server? I just know my username/password, or maybe my username is just the server name?

-From comparing Emby with Plex and Kodi, I feel that there could definitely be better organization and compartmentalization of Emby options. I like that you guys do allow A LOT of control, It's just--as a new user it kinda seems like It's all over the place at times and you really gotta dig to find stuff and sometimes various options aren't where you'd think they'd be. It reminds me of a Jellyfin video I came across last night where the YouTuber was like: "Hmm, where do I find this now, I keep forgetting." Exactly! I got zero issues with finding and getting shit done in Kodi/Plex but with Emby I really gotta look around. Not trying to be rude here, just offering some constructive feedback as a relatively new and inexperienced user.

For example: If I click on "Manage Server" --> Users --> Edit, I'd be expecting to edit my avatar there. But I don't see it there at all. Instead I gotta click top right --> Settings --> Profile to add my avatar. Make it so you can edit / upload from both or organize it a bit better so the process is more streamlined.

For a new shared folder click the (+) next to Folder

If you already see something like "/volume1/MyEmbyMedia/Movies"  then just click on that line.  It should pop up a box where you can put the Optional Shared network folder

Oh geez, I didn't even notice the (+) sign next to "Folders", nor did I even think to click on /volume1/Media/Movies. I was clicking on the (-) sign trying to find the shared network folder even though that didn't make much sense lol. Ok, optional shared network folder path looks good?

Actually, it should probably only have 1 backslash between the server name and "Media" ?
