Hi there,

I encountered a weird issue today. I started an anime on my shield with subtitles and all run fine. As soon as the intro starts I skipped it and the subtitles are gone. I stoped the stream and restarted the stream from the former position and the subtitles shine up again. So, I guess that something during the transcode was messed up while i skipped it.

Oh, before I stoped the stream i tried to disable an reenable the subtitles without access.

I sent a report from my shield (Logged in user Michael) at 14:20 MEZ and attached my logs from starting the stream, skipping and restart.

Eerily similar to a recent report on Roku.  I wonder if this is somehow server related...

However, no subtitles appear to be selected in any of those ffmpeg logs.

So I tried to reproduce the issue and I was able to fetch a litte more informations to you. At first I can assure you that the subtitles were selected. As second I want to tell you that the subtitles work properly when I play the file in the vlc. Now to my new infos. It today i started where I stoped yesterday and skipped from this position and it seems that the subtitles are going out of sync while i skip. I guess that the subs are vanished during skipping the intro due to the fact that there are no subtitles in the intro and the timing is misplacing them.

Edit: If you think that this issue should be better placed in the server section, feel free to move it over there.

Yeah, any kind of subtitle out of sync issue is very likely server/ffmpeg related.

@softworkz...?

This is not an issue with ffmpeg or transcoding because the client is loading the subtitles separately:

Right but what changed?

We've got this report happening in two different apps right now and it looks like it is related to synchronization of the subs which could be related to things we're doing with timestamps, right...?

That's a good question, so I made a comparison between 4.1.1.0 (left) and the current user's log (4.2.0.40):

5d407fa2bfe05_segmentation_compared.jpg

The three new parameters in the new version apply to the video codec only. They do not affect output timestamps.

I've also checked the segment timestamps in the user's ffmpeg log and they are all looking good.

Which are the two clients that are affected?

(do they both use Exo?)

No.  One is a Roku and the other Android TV.  The issue is only seen when delivering via HLS though.

@Luke - Did we make any change to extraction or delivery of ass subtitles?

@ebr - Do you think it is a general problem affecting all users of the latest server version and those two clients? Or just limited in some way? Are we sure that it's working with server 4.1.1.0?

@K1ng_Lear - Does the problem occur with several other videos as well or just with that specific one?

I tried two different files from this series and both showed this issue. To verify it I tried a other file which came with a direct play and everything was fine. Then I triggered a foreced transcode due to the changing of the quality level of the former mentioned file and the subtitles were also out of time. I attached the log of this forced transcode.

Due to the fact that in both cases the subtitles were ASS Files I tried it with a different file with srt subtitles, too. In the last cace the transcode had no effect on the subtitle timing. I attached the log from this try, too.

I was just able to reproduce the problem on the Roku but not Android TV.   The Android TV was direct playing though so I forced it to transcode and then, with enough rew/ff the subs got totally out of sync.  This was against 4.3.0.0 beta.

Do you have a running 4.1.x available to verify that it doesn't happen with that server version?

Hi there,

meanwhile I was able to update to Server 4.3.0.8 beta on my synology, too.

Unfortunately it seems that the problem isn't solved yet, furthermore, it seems to become worse.

After a fast forward the subs not out of sync, instead they're completly vanished. After this I tried a restart from the stopped position and now the subs are appearing again but now they're out of sync.

I added logs from the fast forwarding and the restart, too.

Thanks

Are you positive those are the related logs?

None of them appear to have any subs selected.

Yeah I selected them. Hmm, could it be possible that they were deselected due to the issue?

Especially with last one I am sure, because the subs were out of sync but they appeared. I will test it again and post the logs from the new test, too.

As promised, I made a test again with the same results. This time i sent logs from the app, too. The loged in user was Michael.

I add the logs and i changed the name so that you can figure out what i've done. Oh, by the way, I always check if the subs are enabled and yes, they was enabled.

thx

Hi there,

today I was able to test this behaviour with the actual beta version of the server for Synology (4.3.0.11). Unfortunately I've to say that the problem is still there. I attached the logs.

Hi,

today I was able to update to 4.3.019 on my Synology. I think you're on the right way but you couldn't solve this issue completly. I tested my standard file for this issue and the subs are still vanishing and / or out of time. To verify it, I tested the same file with plex, too, and there was no such issue.

Then I tested a other file wile i am forcing a transcode due the change of the quality settings and there was all fine with the subs. I added logs from both attempts.

Thx

Hi there,

I tested with the last server release 4.3.0.30 and app 1.7.60 and it's becoming worse with the test file. The subtitles are gone now completly. I sent a report and the logged in user was Michael.

This time I set the subtitles to keep the formate and accept the transcoding for a test only and the subs were there. Unfortunately is my NAS not powerful enough to keep this setting.

I tried the same file with emby on my iPad and there was all perfect, furthermore i  could keep the ass subs styled. Seems that the LibMpv Video Player is more capable than the exoplayer.
