This issue is separate from the Shield High bitrate issue because I have the test image installed and it fixed the problem when I play the files in VLC. The video will play for a few seconds then get distorted/flashes of green screen. This is only when using the emby player, if I select external player and set it to VLC they play fine. Here is the server log and ffmpeg log.

I did not see anything weird but I did look around for long, figured I would leave it to the experts! It is for Planet Eath 2.

I'm sure a dev will take a look at the logs but for those reading along are these 8 or 10 bit files?

These are 10 bit files. Not sure if I have tested 8bit.

It's because they are being remuxed by the server. I have a quite a few movies that this happens. This is an issue I can reproduce any time. Try changing the playback options so it plays directly and doesn't remux. See if it makes a difference.

It does change the container on the fly. I feel like I have messed with all the settings, how would I get it to not do that other than transcoding? If I make the files transcode they work, but transcoding 4k files is pretty rough.

Edit - Also like I said it plays just fine off the server when using VLC as an external player on the Shield. Makes me feel like it is emby's player.

You're using subs and the audio is also being transcoded.

Stream mapping:
  Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (copy)
  Stream #0:2 -> #0:1 (dts (dca) -> ac3 (native))
  Stream #0:4 -> #1:0 (subrip (srt) -> webvtt (native))

Try not using subs, and use AC3 (dolby) audio

I can try that. But wouldn't this all still lead to a flaw in the AndroidTV video player? I feel like you are pointing to the server having trouble remux'ing. But the server moves it fine if VLC is used as an external player.

It's the emby build of ffmpeg. VLC can play your movie, natively.

Gotcha. Yea I tried the audio and subs thing and still no dice. Suppose that is why they implemented the use an external player feature hah.

And it played directly? Not direct stream, but direct play.

Nah still direct stream. I already was not using subs. Short of transcoding or re-encoding there is no way to make this file play in Emby.

So that means it's still remuxing. It's probably the audio. Try to find an audio track that is supported.

This is what I get with one of mine, when it gets remuxed.

Yea that is what I get. I will just set to use external player (VLC) when I watch these. Not trying to re-encode all of them hah. Thank you much.

I wonder if it is on the Devs list of things to fix? That is kind of what I was getting at with all this.

Why did it create over 2400 temp files?

Not enough info the answer the question, but in that example it is segmenting both the video and subtitles into small chunks.

That's worrying. I really don't like that so many files are being written for one video!

Segmented streaming is just the way things are done nowadays. If you really want to avoid that, then i would make sure the file can direct play.

Either the video is actually not direct stream-able for some reason (and we need to discover what that is) or our remuxing is actually modifying it somehow.

Can you provide this video to me via dropbox or the like?
