Emby Flashing images on Roku

Emby app 3.0.175, Roku 3800RW ver 9.1.0 b 4111-55 and Vizio TV.

The main screen seems fine, but when I go into the sub level of a movie or tv show, background and other icons start flashing.  If I disable the background images, no difference.  Just started doing this in the last week or 2.

I have another setup, Emby 3.0.175, Roku 3810X ver 9.1.0 b 4111-50, Samsung TV.  This works just fine and no issues with images flashing.

Other than the obvious TV difference, not sure if the build version is what is doing it on the Roku.  Both Roku's have been up/running for 23 days.

Emby server says up to date, 4.1.1.0.

Shows/movies play fine, just more annoying when trying to view details of a show/movie.

Anyone else seen or heard of this yet?

Thanks

Hi there, how did you install emby server?

I'm not really sure what you mean by this?  It runs on a windows 10 PC.  Been running it for years and doing upgrades as they are rolled out and I feel it is time for me to apply updates.

I don't recall how I originally did the install the 1st time.

I did notice my coverart plugin went away.  That might have happened when I went from ver 3 to 4 and I just didn't notice.  That was a few months ago though I think.

Thanks

These two things are probably related.  The flashing images on the Roku is a symptom of your server install missing key image processing components and that would also affect CoverArt.

Make sure an anti-malware or similar system didn't mess with your server install - possibly quarantining some pieces of it.

Wouldn't that mess with all Roku's then?  One setup is working fine, the other is not.  Also this only started in the last couple weeks I think.  The PC I have been running Emby on has been the same for a few years.  No new software.  The last major thing I finally did was move to the latest release of 4.x.  These symptoms were present after that update.

On my emby server the only antimalware/virus is standard windows defender.  When looking at quarantine full history there is none.

Please put your server in debug log mode and then restart it.

Then cause the flashing images on the Roku and post the server log from that.

Thanks.

If this happens only on one Roku it is because the other Roku already have images stashed in: Emby-Server\cache\images\resized-images

The Roku expects Emby server to scale the images delivered because the way Roku uses to store bitmaps because of all the animations, fades, etc possible on the device. Images on Roku take up 4 bytes per pixel (Red/Green/Blue/Alpha aka RGBA). You can tell quickly that this does add up. Now only images actually showing on screen consume space. Everything occuring offscreen is out of the frame buffer so isn't rendered anyways. But all of this is a very careful dance. When your Emby server cannot scale images correctly it disrupts the presentation because we run into texture memory limits. Without scaled images you can run out of texture memory pretty quickly.

We have isolated most of the cases of this happening to users who custom built their Emby installations and are missing key components required to scale images. Using the official Emby server installs (this means everything not your own anything) it will always work. When you try to customize the installation you may wind up breaking things.

You need to provide the logs @@ebr has suggested so that it is possible to track down at which point things go wacky and what the missing dependency might be. That is all this is. It is a hiccup.

Ah so that explains on the install.  Yeah I used the standard way back in the day and never mess with any updates.

Weird though today things are fine again.  I didn't reboot/restart any of the devices.  Now I sound like one of those users that always tell support they didn't do anything but in reality they did, haha.

I will keep an eye on it and if it does it again I will submit the logs to EBR.

Thanks

  • 3 weeks later...

I cannot reproduce this on the low-end Roku express model or the Roku 2 XD I have.

@@Starlionblue Which Roku device/model is this? What operating system is your Emby server running? Is this *nix?

Note: I have had weird behavior on the app at times and had to restart/reboot the Roku express to stop it flaking out on me. I chalk that up to the Roku firmware causing issues though. Is this a Roku express experience the issue?

The issue is the server sending full-sized images to the app.  Easy to reproduce if you don't have a working image library on the server.

But during video playback the only image loaded is the backdrop underlay. Then the logo/boxart for the OSD. It shouldn't have the flicker during video playback. Well the OSD Shade too is an image. But these are kept low resolution to keep us out of that corn field. In the corn field bad things happen. Children of the corn reference. ^_~

It must be related to scaling libraries. I cannot reproduce this on my Roku devices during playback and I have Roku TV, Roku Express, Roku 2XD, Roku 3, Roku Ultra 4640, Roku Ultra 4660. If this is some model I do not have listed perhaps we need that model too. This is why I am really, really curious what the device is and which model. I want the edge case devices and the problem children. I want to experience these issues so I can fix them. ;)

It's only when I bring the interface up, so to speak, by, say, pressing enter, pause, ffw or rew. Video playback itself is flawless.

What is your Roku device model number? Very very curious. Thanks. :)

Please attach the emby server log from when this happened. Thanks.

He posted links to logs in the thread I split out.

We still don't have a clear explanation of exactly what this problem is so I'm not convinced it has anything to do with images or scaling, etc.

According to "About", it is a "3810X - Roku Streaming Stick +" (that's a plus sign at the end). It has version 9.10 build 4111-50

I also noticed that the visual glitch seems to come on after the device has been on for a while. Like not for the first movie or episode, but after a few hours.

I've updated and will monitor and see if the glitch returns.

Wow. That's very service-minded of you. Thank you.

I'll keep my updates on this issue to this other thread so we don't get duplication.

Now that  you mention it, I have noticed this too.  Then all I have to do is exit the emby app.  Not just hit Home on Roku, but exit the app.  Then go back in and it seems fine.

ProperlyFormattedDataFile

The easiest way I've found to reproduce this on my stick is to open up stats for nerds while I'm watching something, then go back to the show screen. The show screen nearly always flickers after I do this.

@@ProperlyFormattedDataFile Does your spinner spin or just float motionless on screen? As if it wants to spin but just lays there motionless?.. yeah. We are fixing that. The spinner will be glorious after. Much better than it was. Also I cannot reproduce this on my Roku Streaming Stick model#3810. Can you give exact steps to reproduce? I got this exact model to do some digging. Thanks. :)

I'm seeing this on my 3800X (Streaming Stick, not Stick+).  My wife is the primary user of our 3810, and she hasn't noticed this issue either.  The issue isn't really with the spinner so much as it is various background images on the page.  I took a couple videos, but I notice this forum doesn't allow uploading mp4s (and I suppose there is technically copyrighted content in the video).  If there's an appropriate way for me to get those to you, let me know.  If it helps, I also uploaded Roku logs at 9:47PM EDT today.

This is exactly what I did

Open Emby

Navigate to my "Recordings Library"

Navigate to "Penn and Teller: Fool Us"

Navigate to "Season 6"

Scroll down and pick episode 1

Play the episode.  This is a 8mbps mp4 with closed captions extracted to SRT.  The mp4 is transcoded to 6mbps as I've needed to set a global 6mpbs max due to https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/73689-mpeg2-atsc-playback-on-roku-stick-stick-is-very-glitchy.

Load stats for nerds.

Dismiss stats for nerds

Hit the back button on my remote.

At this point, the page describing the episode has images flashing in and out on the background.  Several other show pages exhibit the same behavior, but not the home screen or the playback screen for subsequent videos.

Edit: I just went and tried these exact steps on our 3810RW, and they do not cause flashing.  This is very reproducible on the 3800X. Much like the MPEG2 issue referenced above, the 3810 seems to be generally less terrible than the 3800.
