Multiple Versions of Same TV Episode - like with Movies

I know with Movies I can have multiple versions of the same movie treated as 1. Ex: "Movie Name - 480p" and "Movie Name - 1080p". Or "Movie Name - Director's Cut" and "Movie Name - Theatrical Cut". I use this frequently. I was wondering if there is something similar for TV shows though. I checked the Wiki and nothing screamed to me "I'm the solution!".

 

So right now I am ripping a show and some episodes come as original and a second version of the episode with commentary. How do people handle having these included??

Hi, Emby already supports this. As long as they both follow the tv naming guide, both versions will be grouped together similar to movies.

Just tried it. It is supported! However it is not quite as elegant as Movies. They show, in the dropdown, just the end bits (Directors Cut) whereas shows show the entire file name. Still better than nothing

Do the same as you would with Movie naming convention.

 

Examples below:

Original Version: SeriesName.S01E01 - Episode Name

Commentary Version: SeriesName.S01E01 - Episode Name - Commentary

 

You should get a pull down option depending on the Emby app used that will allow you to select Original episode or the episode with Commentary.

they strip off all common starting characters of the file names, so make sure they are uniform. @@cayars that should go into the wiki. It's not a requirement for this feature to work, but it will make the version selection box look nicer.

I hate to argue since you are being quite helpful here, but those are direct copy/paste titles where the only discrepancy is at the very end " - Commentary". If it were stripping off all common starting characters then it should look different shouldn't it? Unless I need a "- something" at the end of both for that to work?

Yep, need an end bit on both. Now it looks better.

Maybe there's a reason to have two files for a commentary that i don't get but maybe you should remux the two in a single file. Saves disk space and is fairly easy to do

Yeah, something like MKV Tool Nix makes it easy and quick to remux. Or just rip it with both audio tracks to begin with.

On the Blu-Ray disc they are separate video tracks, hence ripping the two files. I have never remuxed something and may have to give that a try.

Yeah as long as you can rip the audio separately and both video files are identical so everything will sync up right it should be a straightforward process of just adding the second audio track an MKV Tool Nix (or similar)... The GUI for it is very approachable
