4K HEVC on 2018 Q6

Does anyone have an idea why I may not be able to stream 4K content directly to my Samsung TV without it stopping and loading every 10 seconds?

I've tried a few files all with similar codecs.

Originally I thought it was caused by my Devolo power line not having enough bandwidth, but I don't think it's that as I connected my laptop into the same RJ45 cable and I can direct stream the same files no worries.

I even tried directly connecting the TV to an RJ45 port with a long patch cable, and without the power line (much to my partners dismay) and the issues remain.

Doesn't feel like a server side issue, is it worth uploading logs anyway?

Any advise on things to test/experiment with would be appreciated.

Almost sounds like the server is trying to burn in PGS type subtitles on the fly.  That usually does it for me as it takes a lot of horsepower and I get the movie in chunks like that.  Logs (server and transcode if available) and a screen shot of the media info from the bottom of the movie details page would probably help

Sorry for the slow reply, had a few other things to take care of.

I have PM'd you the password

Anyone else who would like to see the logs, just let me know and I can share the password by PM. Rather not publicly upload logs that show everything my emby server does.

Note that whilst trying to stream 4k content, my server isn't particularly heavily loaded, just a couple of cores spiking, as compared to when i'm trans coding and, depending on the bit rates, the cores (12c/24t across 2 sockets) are pretty much all hitting 100%.

Can you select the AC3 track and see if it helps at all.  It's converting the Atmos track to DD , though shouldn't be that hard on your system.  I can play similar files over 802.11ax network   If you select the AC3 track though it should Direct Play

Also, are you clicking FF or REW while playing?  There is a known bug that those buttons cause spinning circle on 2018s

I've seen this issue as well when streaming 4k content.  For example, TrueHD to AC3 audio conversion.  I haven't been able to track it down.  As you say CPU and network are not overloaded, and there is enough content encoded so it is not waiting for anything.  I actually see this on LG and Samsung.  There does seem like there is a lot of disk activity, even on an ssd, but even with low disk activity it still pauses.

I've just tested this on a MacBook Pro running Emby server and I have the same issue.

I've always been assuming a system/network/resource constraint, but after this test I'm wondering if it is an issue with the stream/segment creation.

I know about the FF/RW issue, it's definitely not that. Changing to a different audio stream seemed to fix it (Stereo/5.1 DD/DTS) so that's at least a solution for getting the streams working in the mean time. Anyone know if there is a way of setting the app to default to these settings if they're available?

As a side note to the FF/RW issue, I just discovered if you pause, then FF/RW, you dont get the spinning circle stuck on the video.

I have PMd those across to you. Let me know if there are any further tests you would like me to do that may help.

Note that I have set transcode write caches on the server to an SSD, so there shouldnt be any kind of limit there.

I'm not aware of any way to make the app automatically chose that English AC3 track without making it the default audio file yourself.  If you have a bunch of files though that could be a pita without writing a script

The settings in the app only allow you to choose a language.  Then after that it will choose the default audio file that meets the criteria if there is one, then if no default the first one it finds.

I get around this by using mkvtoolnix to take out all the stuff I don't want before copying it to my NAS and making sure the the audio track I want is default.  I don't have a bunch of different clients though

I only have a few 4k/UHD files at the moment, so it's not too much o fa big deal for me to sort this out manually one by one.

Rather than deleting the bits I dont want, I tried just changing the default flag using the header editor, but that doesn't seem to have resolved it, it sill picks the True HD despite knowing thats not the default, and having "any" language and the selected default flag ticked in the app.

Edit: Scratch that - It does seem to select the correct one. I'm not sure which action I did to trigger it (possibly a library rescan) but it seems to work now, unless the file was already played with the true HD as default

Ahh, ya you need to re-scan or refresh the metadata for that movie in order for Emby to know the new default

And if you've already started watching it will recall the last selected track, so if you started playback with TrueHD then it will use that for the next playback regardless of the default track flag.

It seems fine for most of the files I have fiddled with and tested, but I have one that misbehaves and refuses to take notice of the default flag. It was also turning into a slide show whilst watching it last night so I'm wondering if its a bad file.... only the one 4k TV to properly test it on though.

Ill dig a bit deeper with it tonight to see if there is anything worth investigating.

Did you read what SamES said? Why exactly do you feel it did not take notice of the default flag?

I hadnt played the file, yet it repeatedly presented me with the true HD audio when I clicked on the poster as if I was going to play it.

It recognised that true HD wasn't the default (noted by clicking the drop down and observing which was was labelled as default), but no matter what I did I couldn't get to actually use a 5.1 audio as the default when clicking on it. It did this on my laptop and phone also... But it's just this one file.

Did you explore your emby user subtitle preferences?

Subtitles are all off by default. Is there something specific I should check for?

Note that I had a drive failure today so I'm currently waiting for the data to rebuild.

What does the media info look like in the web app?

I'll let you know when(if) my array comes back online.

...thank the lord for my forethought to keep cold spare drives.

If you haven't figured it out yet could you post the media info for that movie.  Thanks

So it seems that now my server has been through the ringers and back, it is now loading up the problematic file correctly and showing the default.

This doesn't seem to be just a 4K and TrueHD issue.  Happens with 1080p and converting lossey DTS to AC3 on my 2018 too.  Every couple of minutes it pauses to convert another chunk.  It's real quick, but still kind of annoying.  Maybe just a second or two at most.

I may just have to end up converting all my DTS to AC3 after all since a lot of these older movies don't have an AC3 track to select
