Parental rating and music

Hello! Long-time HTPCer, but new it MB3. I setup my son as a user with a parental rating of Y-7. Movies and TV shows work fine, you can only see shows with a rating of Y-7 or less. But in music, while you can only play music I marked as Y-7, you can see all artists and albums. I'd rather not have him see Rob Zombie cover art for a few more years! A side effect of this is the small covers shown on the view button also pulls from all albums, while movies/tv only use ones he can watch.

Since all his music his under genre Children, it would be nice to have the ability to limit by genre instead of rating. Then, I wouldn't need to a rating to all his songs.

Thanks! Looking forward to learning the ins and outs of this program.

A lot of music doesn't have ratings so I imagine that is part of your problem.

In the User settings for his user (where you set the maximum level) also check off music under "Block items with no ratings".

Yeah, I have that checked. To be a little more clear, in the music view, under songs, I can only see (and play) songs that I gave the Y-7 rating. All other songs do not have a rating and do not show up. Under Artists, only artists of those Y-7 songs so up and likewise under Genre only the genre(s) of those songs show. But under Albums and Album Artists, it shows all of them regardless of rating. If I select one of those albums, I get this:

Hope that's a bit clearer!

No, it also happens in the WP8 app. Songs, artists and genres only show Y-7 rated info, but albums shows all albums.

I haven't tried any other clients.

If you edit one of these albums with the web metadata editor, what Parental rating does it show?

As far a I can tell (I have 37000+ songs/2500+ albums), all artists have no rating. All songs have no rating. And all albums, except the ones I changed to Y-7, have no rating. Since the songs of the 'Y-7' albums appear and play, I guess they inherit the rating of their parent (album). That's a good thing since editing 24 albums is a lot quicker than 400+ songs.

Thanks for the quick response and digging into this!

Yes, I'm sure the problem will be consistent with everything except maybe MBC because it is at the API/data level.

Music metadata is spotty and ratings are even more spotty so we just haven't figured out exactly how to handle it all perfectly yet.
