TV Show Extras

I would love to be able to do the following.  For example, say you have a TV Show episode called "The Robbery" from Seinfeld.  Any extras for that episode like Commentary, Deleted Scenes, etc.. could be listed with that episode or tied to that episode on a screen for access.  Would any of that be possible?

Hi, yes I think it's, we just would have to figure out the folder structure for this because currently episodes are all together in season folders.

I have been putting my tv show extras in Season 0 of a tv show, but would definitely love a better way to tie them into their episodes.

I've offered a proposal for how this might be achieved in the following post:

Here is a quick suggestion of folder structure.

5cf7ff59a142c_Screenshotat20190605133532

I each series/season/episode, you have an 'Extras' and 'Trailers' folder to put the appropriate media at each level you need.

That has also the bonus effect of de-cluttering the season folders because when you have a season with 26 episodes plus subtitles in a few languages, nfos, thumbnails and multiple resolutions (which require their own subs), the file count goes up and ease of use goes down.

As far as how it will show up within emby, it's almost there.

  • When you enter a series: The Series level Trailer goes in a button on top and the Series level Extras at the bottom in a row (under the cast as in Movies)
  • When you enter a season: You get the typical episode list with the Season level Trailer button on top and the Season level Extras in a row at the bottom of the list. (Season level Trailers and Extras are rare, but i've seen them)
  • When you enter an episode detail page: You get the Episode level Trailers in a button on top and the Episode level Extras at the bottom in a row (under the cast as in Movies)

Yea i think the sub-folder per episode is the way it would have to be.

that would be great! Make it so!

(...or at least put that on your massive to-do list)  :D

Those are great ideas! @@Luke, do you envision that this would support the mixing of "episodes without extras" not being in a subfolder, being alongside "episodes with extras" which would (in the above scheme) need to be in a subfolder?

I'll illustrate with a variation of the above example:

Season 1

> Seinfeld - 1x01 - The Seinfeld Chronicles.mkv

> Seinfeld - 1x03 - The Robbery

>> Seinfeld - 1x03 - The Robbery.mkv

>>Extras

>>>The Making of The Robbery.mkv

Note how in the above 1x01 is not in an episode-specific subfolder because there are no extras (in my example), but that 1x03 is in a subfolder because it does have episode-specific extras.

When setting up a new series it's not a problem to use a file renamer (eg, FileBot) to put each episode in it's own folder. But for re-doing series already within Emby it would be easiest to just put episodes in their own folder if they also have episode specific extras (which for some series won't be the case for every episode). Hence, my question.

I was just curious to know if this is seriously being considered in the relatively short term or just, as you often say "a good idea for the future" ?

Just want to add my +1 on this.

I have been ripping my DVD and Blueray film collection and there is a supported folder structure to include any movie extras in a separate 'extras' or 'trailers' folder. These then appear as a separate strip in the movies details page in the apps.

I have started doing this for my TV show collection thinking it would work the same way.

A good example of this is the British show Red Dwarf that have released each season with an extra DVD (sometimes 2 or 3) filled with documentaries, extras, deleted scenes etc.

Unfortunately instead of them appearing as a separate extras strip in the season details view they are all just bundled in with the rest of the episodes.

I have seen suggestions to rename them as series 00 but then they appear for all seasons, not just the ones they are relevant to. I see that TVDB has some of the extras listed and can identify them but the vast majority of them are missing.

Can we basically treat TV show season extras the same as we treat Movie extras?

Yes it's possible for the future. Thanks.

Was hoping for more than the standard response Luke, for instance how do you advise I should be labelling and sorting these extras to make them appear under the correct season at least?

PenkethBoy

1. Name any Extras that match https://thetvdb.com/series/red-dwarf/seasons/official/0 this list from tvdb - with the correct S00Exx

2. Any remaining extras also name as S00Eyy - where yy is your own numbering - leave a gap between xx and yy so any updates to tvdb do not clash - say start at 50

3. Each S00Eyy episode needs you to specify in the episode metadata when it is supposed to appear and emby will do that for you

4 Optional - you could update the TVDB with your extras that it does not have.

e.g.

5e4fbc1388fdd_Annotation20200221111557.j

Make sure all your extras are in a Season 0 folder as well

So this is in your control although you have to do some work

Thanks @@PenkethBoy will have a look at adding the episode meta, that might be enough to help re-order things in the listings.

With 12 series of Red Dwarf bundling all those extras into just one Season 0 folder will make it hard to find items relevant to a specific season outside of emby, ie in windows explorer.

If I'm doing all this work anyway I might look into updating TVDB first so at least it might help someone else in the future.

Still hope emby is updated to put these in a separate 'Extras' strip under the season info screen like it already does for movie extras.

For my own case, until emby releases a better way of doing this, i just pile up the extras in a folder aptly called "extras" but i make sure to name the files in a way to retain which season/show they belong with.

Example:

S1 - episode 3 - making of.mkv

Or..

S1 - making of.mkv

When Emby scans this, it adds metadata as if this is the actual episode and i see the episode and its 'making of' in the episode version pulldown button. After, i remove any superfluous metadata from the 'making of' and I'm done.

So at least in the meantime i can see and have access to everything, and i retain where they belong.

Obviously this is a little time consuming and not for everyone, but it's another option to consider, until the wonderful future when we can all sort this properly.

After making a change to a Season 0 item, how do you easily verify it will put the episode in the correct spot?

I just tried this with a show for an Season1 Extra of bloopers but it doesn't add it to the end of season 1.  So how to we verify it will play it at the correct time?

You have to edit the special episode numbers.

I did the editing but nothing changes visually. It doesn't move the extra to the season I associated it with, so there is no way to tell for example the blooper real will play after the last episode of season 1.  That is what I'm asking.

I think there needs to be a distinction between 'Special Episodes' of a series, that will typically have info for them on TVDB or similar, and 'Extras' that will be things on a box set DVD like behind the scenes, bloopers, cast interviews etc.

The latter would work much better if you could drop them into a seasons extra folder much like you can do with Movie extras.

Anyone else agree?

I agree. I'm sure there's a way to preserve the current 'season 0' way of doing, and have a distinction for folders called 'extras' or 'behind the scenes' etc...

In the end, special episodes would be handled as usual (seeing them within a season, etc) and have the 'making of' type content show up in a way similar to what is done in movie libraries.
