Are you sure it's not a 5.1 to stereo conversion or something like that ? (could depend on loads of things, Not sure WMP is the best test program for a baseline)

Also i think the dev's are gonna need a media-info from that file so If you would not mind attach that a swell :) (Just in case)

WMP and Media Player Classic Home Cinema sounded the same - So, I think it is producing the proper sound. Also, when I tried playing the transcoded .webm with WMP - it sounded weird. There is something wrong with the transcoder or the transcoder settings.

I have also tried the web interface on older video files that I know aren't in 5.1 - they still sound wrong.

The audio plays normally through mediabrowser classic on WMC and through the mediabrowser 3 app on windows - however, these do not require transcoding.

in advanced -> transcoding, try setting the audio boost value to 1

Already tried that. It just made it quieter. Still sounds wrong.

UPDATE: Solved the issue -- Look at the bottom of this post for what I did to fix it.

I noticed the audio quality on the web player sounds off. I'm not sure how to describe the issue, it almost sounds like reverse stereo.

I recorded the issue and posted it to YouTube

Look at the VU meter as it plays through, you will notice that the transcoded audio playback's left and right channels are slightly out of sync.

I have tried different source video formats, adjusting the quality options in the server software, as well as playing the .webm file directly - the audio issue persists.

I even tried updating ffmpeg manually, it still sounds wrong.

LogFile of the Transcode:

Info - App: C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Roaming\MediaBrowser-Server\ffmpeg\20140304\ffmpeg.exe -ss 29.5068 -fflags genpts -i file:"E:\TV SHOWS\Family Guy\Family Guy Season 9 #\Family.Guy.S09E01.avi" -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -map -0:s -vcodec libvpx -force_key_frames expr:if(isnan(prev_forced_t),gte(t,.1),gte(t,prev_forced_t+5)) -vf "scale=min(iw\,720):-1" -speed 16 -quality good -profile:v 0 -slices 8 -crf 4 -maxrate:v 995001 -bufsize:v (995001*2) -b:v 995001 -r 23.97602 -vsync vfr -map_metadata -1 -threads 3 -acodec libvorbis -ac 2 -ab 128000 -af "adelay=1,aresample=async=1" "D:\MediaBrowserServer\Transcode\dda078b5-97c3-3dc9-67a3-dbf0e853d9d0.webm"

Media-Info on the original and webm files:

Server Version: Version 3.0.5238.39498

Server is running on Windows Server 2012 R2 - No audio card is installed in the server.

UPDATE: SOLVED IT!

Installed Shark007 Codecs, Updated to the newest Media browser Release (stable) version (the new UI one), rebooted machine

Sound is good now!

Ah then you got all the bases covered :) Can't say that I have experienced this, but hopefully someone will figure it out!

I wonder if this could be an issue with the audio sample rate and bit depth. On my windows client, I have my audio format set to 24 bit - 48000HZ (Studio Quality). The server doesn't have any audio output device installed, although I'm not sure how that would affect it. I'll try changing the format and see if that fixes it.

Update: Nope - still weird sounding.
