So I recently bought a WD MyCloud Home to install and run plex on. it worked great until i didnt have internet and the whole mess revealed itself to me.I have cut my losses, got over the anger of being screwed by WD marketting and want to start fresh.

Could someone point me in the direction of a simple build guide for the best bang-for-buck server setup to run Emby on? I dont have an old PC laying around so I would need to buy items from scratch, whether it be a server tower or NAS or Raspberry Pi or laptop or whatever.

Some user specific things:

  • My family only has max 4 people that would stream at the same time.
  • We don't watch anything above 1080P, most of the time its just SD stuff.
  • We would be watching one stream through a roku 4 and the rest would be over wifi to tablets or laptops. Windows, Android and iOS.
  • I need to assume that i will have codecs that need to be transcoded on-the-fly.
  • low power consumption and form factor is best (I guess this goes without saying) but not compulsory.
  • I have not used Linux before but it is not out of the question if there are easy enough directions ( I have a fair amount of experience with IT to be able to fiddle to get things running most of the time)
  • I am in a country with limited options for PC hardware and peripherals so I wont necessarily be able to get exactly what is recommended.

Thanks!

Can you buy an Intel NUC? If yes, I'd suggest a 7th gen or above and use a NAS for storage.

That'll probably get you what you want. Just make sure to hook a monitor to the HDMI port, to enable hardware acceleration.
