Which Roku model is this? I am guessing Roku express model #3900 or #3700?

What firmware version is on your Roku? Is this firmware 9.1.x or still 9.0.x?

If you raise your Roku display settings to 1080P this will fix it. Go to Roku display settings from the Roku homescreen. Choose 720P and let it adjust. Then say yep that works. Now choose 1080P and let it adjust. Then say yep it works. Now you should not have a problem. You can leave it at 1080P but for the firmware to adjust properly you must choose both 720P and then 1080P to fix this.

This is a known issue where Roku firmware updates cause the Roku express to not report back its display capabilities correctly to apps.

Plex just throws everything at the Roku regardless if it can play it correctly. They let you "Force" play methods such as "Force DirectPlay". This is them not being able to accurately detect everything. We have accurate detection in Emby. If you change your display twice (following the steps above exactly) you can fix this issue. Other apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Youtube will also have this issue where you will be limited to 720P videos. Maybe you just don't notice it there or use those services.

Also to know why something is transcoding on Roku:

1) Play the item and press down on the Roku remote

2) Find the gear/cog (bottom row of action buttons on the OSD) and click it.

3) On the playback settings that opens just find "Stats for nerds" and change it to "Yes"

4) Enjoy stats for nerds on Roku. The reason for transcoding is shown on screen.

( Note: The stats for nerds remembers. You can leave it on as you play more videos and it will remember to come back when the video player is shown and goes away with the video player. The stats for nerds does not show without video playing. Stats for nerds updates every 10 seconds on screen. )
