Home Screen Issue With One Library

I have several libraries and most of them appear on the Home Screen as expected, i.e. files will appear in all sections as appropriate or not at all if I've elected for them not to appear on the Home Screen.

I have one library for which the Home Screen isn't working properly. Episodes will always appear in 'Continue Watching', usually but not always in 'Latest' and very rarely in 'Next Up'.

It's the 'very rarely in Next Up' which is the biggest issue as instead of just pressing play from Next Up we have to go the library, find the show then play 'Next Up' from there which is hardly onerous but it would be good if it worked as I think it's supposed to (First World problems!). I've tried both 'File creation date' and 'Date scanned' for 'Date Added Behaviour' but it makes no difference.

This is across all of our client types - Firestick, Windows and XBox - so I assume it's a server issue (Windows 10 Pro, v4.1.1.0).

I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to try next. Any suggestions please?

Thanks.

Hi. Is that library a TV Series type library?  Are the shows in question properly identified and do all of the episodes have proper season and episode numbers?

Can we look at a specific example of one  you think should be there that isn't?

Thanks.

Oh that's odd. I've just composed a reply, complete with screen shots, the forum appeared to take it when I pressed 'Post' but it's not there. I'll try again.

The forum is still not taking my response so I'll try adding the screenshots as attachments rather than inline. Perhaps I've broken a size limit.

Hi embr,

Yes it's a TV Series type library, the one shown in att1.

Yesterday evening we watched an episode from this library called Lightfields and an episode from our Documentaries library (also type TV Series) called Timeshift. Emby knows the 'next up' episode for Lightfields is E02, see att2, but it's not shown in 'Next Up', see att3.

That's the correct episode of Timeshift. Most of the other episodes in that list are from shows we haven't watched for a long time. We haven't watched any of Making a Murderer so I'm not sure why Emby thinks the next one to watch is S02E08 but I guess that's a different issue (it shows the same thing when I go to the show itself).

Did you try clicking the next up header to take you to the screen with more next up titles?

I don't know the exact sort ordering, but watching a episode of a series does not put that series first up in the Next Up section.  Also believe the Home Screen has a display limited of 16 items, and the Library/Suggestions Next is limited to 30 items.

I may be misunderstanding your post but whenever I watch an episode from my TV library the next unwatched episode is placed in the first position of "Next up." That is exactly the behavior I would want and the behavior I would expect. That is if I watch an episode of a series it is quite reasonable to expect that I would soon want to watch the following episode. This is even more true if the episode I watched was the pilot of the series.

The way I like to watch is to have something between four and ten shows in the first positions of "Next up" and watch the episode that is in the last of those places. After it is complete the next episode is placed at position one and all the others move up one spot so that the one that was just to the left when I press play on the episode I watched is moved so that all I need do is press play to play it.

This is the perfect behavior for me as I watch series most of the time from the "Next up" list. I hope it never changes.

Edit: There is a setting in the library settings that causes libraries items to be shown in "Next up" or not shown. Maybe the problem lies in that setting.

I hadn't but I now have and the next episode of Lightfields is not listed at all. There are some episodes from the 'problem' library listed but they're from series we watched quite a while ago. It's almost as if it was working at some point and has now stopped.

Is there? I can see a setting entitled 'Display in home screen sections such as latest media and continue watching' and that is checked for this library but I can't see one specifically for 'Next Up'. If I've missed that you're right, it would explain the behaviour. Are you able to tell me where it is please?

Edited to correct typo.

That is the setting I was talking about. If it is checked items from the library will appear in things like "Next up" and if not they will not. If you have it checked for a TV library and you are not getting items from that library in "Next up" then something else is wrong.

The only way I can think of that you could watch an episode and not get the next episode in that series in "Next up" would be if the series is already marked as watched. In that case there are no unwatched episodes to go into "Next up."

The rest of the series is unwatched. Emby knows that as it shows me episode 2 as 'next up when I go to the series (att2 above). It's not just this series, it's any series we watch in this library.

Edit: Your comment made me try something. I unchecked the box on the Home Screen setup page which is entitled 'Hide watched content from latest media'. The next episode of Lightfields then appeared in the home screen. As you can see from the attachment, later episodes are not marked as watched. I then rechecked the 'hide watched content' box and the next episode is still there. I'll monitor it now to see if that's done some sort of reset and resolved the issue. Thanks for the suggestion.

That is a difference between the way we have our libraries setup. I never check that I want to hide content. I guess I have never seen an advantage to hiding stuff.

I have seen cases where a system was acting like a box was checked or a choice was made even when it was not until the setting was toggled. The more complex a system is the more likely it becomes that random inexplicable effects will creep into it. The various forms of "Murphy's Law" can can manifest themselves in multiple ways. "The perversity of the universe tends toward a maximum."

I understand what's happening now and it's nothing to do with the 'Hide watched content' check box, that was a red herring.

For most series in this library we delete episodes after we've watched them. If we do that the next episode isn't shown in 'Next Up' *. If we don't delete it the next episode is shown.

That seems a bit perverse. If we've just finished watching, say, E03, E04 is the 'Next Up whether we've deleted E03 or not. Is the behaviour we're seeing WAD?

We're working round the issue by only deleting watched episode-1 until we've completely finished watching something.

(* I'm not convinced we're seeing the same behaviour for our Documentaries library but I haven't looked at this closely as we tend to jump around between series in that library; I'll test it later.)

That's not possible on the Firestick is it @Luke?

The same thing does happen in our documentaries library - if we delete the episode we've just watched the following episode does not appear in Next Up - so at least it's consistent. I think my question above may have been missed so is this WAD?

Thanks.
