I have been encoding my own TV recordings for a while. I recently stopped encoding with NVENC and the 1050ti and started doing x265 with the cpu.

I do them in my server which has a Ryzen 1800x and said 1050ti. Every few days when I run a batch of encodes (5-10 recordings), handbrake will close on its own mid encode.

The PC does not reboot, everything else is normal, when I re-open the app it says there are still things in the queue would you like to resume.

I am not sure what is happening but its only since I started doing x265.

The CPU is at stock speeds so should be stable, heat is not an issue as I often monitor it while using handbrake. I am at a loss as why its stopping. I looked at one of the logs and its just cut off, as if you just abruptly closed the app.

Anyone have any ideas?

I dont use Handbrake anymore but i did have the same problem with some video's causing HB to crash - are you on the latest version?

I now do re-encodes with ffmpeg directly (nvidia) as its more stable and once you get over the learning curve easy to modify what you want to do

What OS are you using

Thanks, I am using the latest stable version, the major release, and my OS is windows 10 Pro.

I have no idea how to use ffmpeg on its own.

@@cayars might be of assistance.

I'm not a fan of Handbrake but do conversions to both H.264 and H.265.

I too use ffmpeg vs Handbrake as I have far more control over the process.  This way I can do things like ppull out the subtitles to SRT external files, add AAC 2 channel stereo audio if not present, strip any audio or subtitles not in languages I care about, etc

Is it all command line? Any links to some info on how a guy could get started. We are talking no GUI is that correct?

Doing some googling it looks like I could run a .bat file in a certain folder to process all the files in that folder? Can I control things like where they are saved to?

I guess I have a ton of reading to do to get a lot of my HB settings over to a bat file.

Yes a Bat file will work

I use powershell instead

I have a "simple" PS script that will convert files to h265 using a nvidia card - if you want to try that - drop me a PM

I use Handbrake and I use FreeMake (A program like HandBrake but with an easier to understand interface and the easy ability to join or cut files built in) and I sometimes use MakeMKV but it seems unreliable for my use.

Mainly lately I use FreeMake because it is just easier and it is easier to add multiple files from a single or multiple directories without having to add an entire directory and can output into different containers as needed/wanted.

I "can" use ffmpeg directly but I do not have the real need for that level of fine control as all I need is a simple conversion that produces a file that plays correctly. I do not care about anything beyond 1080p and I do not care about fancy audio and I see no reason to use any container other than MKV or MP4. I usually use MP4 for my needs.

But, to be honest I usually do not reprocess the old files I have because I am the only user and my server is quite able to easily transcode on the file. I have a LOT of files I inherited from my uncle, he was a collector and had converted much of his huge library to digital back when avi was "the" container and much of his library was in avi when I received it. The only time I convert these is when there is a problem with playback.

If I had to choose just one program to use for all my conversion it would be FreeMake even though it is a bit slower than HandBrake for the same conversion. It is that much easier to use.
