Pretty much the entire episode is dark scenes, with some being literally unviewable. Anybody got any tips on how to get around this? Any particular settings on my TV? Need to double check but I'm fairly sure it's not AMOLED It's not just a GoT issue, I've had unviewable dark scenes before (I'm looking at you, Daredevil...) but this has been a particularly bad example. That seems to be the new craze dark scenes … same thing with Hannah on Prime. I have to watch in total darkness. BAlGaInTl 279 Posted April 30, 2019 Share Posted April 30, 2019 I ran into the same issue last night. On my computer monitor in a well lit room, it was virtually unviewable. I went down and watched it on my main Sony 65" TV and it was fine. The sun was on the other side of the house too, so that's probably part of the issue. I get what the directors/producers were trying to do. They wanted to add a certain amount of confusion with the dark scenes and quick cuts. Jdiesel 1113 Posted April 30, 2019 Share Posted April 30, 2019 First make sure you are using the correct color range for your device/display to make sure the blacks aren't being crushed. Use a test pattern to set your display's brightness and contrast. Realize that that episode was a creative decision to make things dark and hard to see. It could definitely have used a little more bitrate though as it's very compressed. Hopefully the BD/UHD version will be better. While I'm not a fan of the trend as a whole, I thought the darkness of this episode was appropriate.I found scenes in Homecoming unreasonably dark and I had to send some time fine-tuning my tv to actually enjoy it (maybe that's why GOT worked for me?).I'm curious which scenes people found unviewable, because there was not a scene where it was only blackness with shadows moving (except of course the obvious scenes with the army looking into blackness). Or even a scene where one character could be seen but nothing else. Edit: I just played a few scenes on my computer and the episode is so dark it's unwatchable... completely different on my tv... notla49285 46 Posted May 1, 2019 Author Share Posted May 1, 2019 I get what they're trying to do and it's creative blah blah blah, the fact is, it just pisses people off. I see that the cinematographer for this episode has come out and said most people don't have their TVs set up properly, no duh, but that's the way it is. His answer took me straight back to Apple on the release of the iPhone 4: you're holding it wrong! Whatever they had in mind for this episode just didn't come out for most people, be it because they don't have a decent screen, are watching with too much ambient lighting, have the wrong settings, doesn't matter - you need to cater for the audience you've got. It didn't simulate a night scene where things are difficult to see in my opinion, I just got a load of grey on my screen where blacks and dark colours should be and for quite a lot of the episode it wasn't that I couldn't see much, I couldn't see anything. Whatever highfalutin opinion you have on stupid viewers with their stupid TVs and their stupid TV settings, it's fucking annoying and puts people off shows very quickly. 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
