Microsoft And GitHUb, now what? The Future of Emby.

There is no doubt that GitHub is one of the best Git repository hosting service for any open source project. But as you know that Microsoft has already acquired GitHub, so there might be some changes coming in near future focusing on only profit, as what Microsoft always does. Following this volatile situation, the dev teams of various open source project creator are already changing or will change the version control host into something that does not focus only profit or actually supports open source project smoothly.

I'm concern about all this, and what Microsoft represents....

Emby is gonna stay on GitHub?

Thanks.

You do realize that Emby is built on Microsoft's .Net Core right? If you are concerned about Microsoft owning Github you should probably be more concerned with the framework Emby is built on.

Good for you. But for the mere mortals our privacy an many others dark sides that MS have....and maybe a possible "complete take of MS" is not good for anybody.

They are taking a lot of work free, like always. They are taking your life, they are bloatwing you

That's another concern

This is from the new CEO, 6 months ago:

When we announced the acquisition in June, I shared two principles for GitHub that are worth repeating:

  • GitHub will operate independently as a community, platform, and business. This means that GitHub will retain its developer-first values, distinctive spirit, and open extensibility. We will always support developers in their choice of any language, license, tool, platform, or cloud.

  • GitHub will retain its product philosophy. We love GitHub because of the deep care and thoughtfulness that goes into every facet of the developer’s experience. I understand and respect this, and know that we will continue to build tasteful, snappy, polished tools that developers love.

I you trust in that CEO? hehe.

Many people here lives of Microsoft. That's ok.

Think about why Microsoft bought GitHub, just think about it, a little bit harder. Take your time --

Microsoft is not the future in OS, Microsoft is desperate.

This thread is the very worst type of thread.

If you are bored go on a "Discussions on Religion" forum and post something about the non existence of God.

You will have a lot of people talk to you if you are lonely. They wont all disagree and you can have a nice debate!

Otherwise, lets cut out the FUD!

Many developers are migrating their projects to other platforms, my question is for those who develop this software. What are you thinking of doing? Nothing?

More clear that the water can not be, the last steps of Microsoft are going to adopt open software, it comes out cheaper, the problem is when a trojan horse like Microsoft does. They're saying they're helping the community, that's crap.

That you say it does not bother me, your nationality does not give you the right to tell me that I can speak here or in another part of the forum, unless you are the owner of this. It is a valid question that worries many people. Ignorance is humanity's worst enemy, the powerful want nobody to know anything. -

You can post anywhere you like.

However, your concern is pointless. The devs will decide where they wish to host the project and I am sure it will be a commercial decision rather than ethical.

As long as Emby works, WHO CARES?

Microsoft is good for the industry. Stop spreading Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt!!!

Up until 3 years ago they provided me with a living as well but that wasn't necessarily a good thing (on their part).

Sorry , is not, like it or not. Nobody cares your manipulation in favor of Microsoft.

Github today is  what it is (microsoft), and not what it was that's the point. Period.

Microsoft is not good for industry... or you are bill Gates partner?

Ohh, YES!  Yahoo is good too, i forgot!

For real, you think that Microsoft is gonna pay that special price for nothing? The price that MS pay for GitHub is a joke. The profit from that is what MS needs. And that is not fear for the community.

MS is a company looking for money. You have to pay license for everything and be bloated by a company that wants to know what you do, when and where.

The development inside GitHub in a mine for MS. They argue a lot of stupid reasons to justify the acquisition, but behind that, the true is another. They are many other real things behind.

You can't see anything different since, of course you don't. MS always do the same.

You can say the same with Yahoo... is Yahoo the same? In the surface, yes.

Not to long. MS is looking to not spend gazillions of dollars in code. The new Chrome based browser is one big start (you can find many).

Every line of code is a lot of money, and MS is loosing space. Now with Proton, Steam, etc MS knows that they are not the future.

Many users are migrating to Linux desktop or whatever, for example Germany does that migration.

MS is not white, is gray and black, and you you have to pay for that.

Considering that Emby is no longer open source, does it really matter if they stay?

Not really. You can fork an older version, and that has been done.

GitHub is (and has been for as long as I remember) closed source as well. The model is Free with additional paid plans that offer more features and/or support. So why do you think that Microsoft would rush to change that model? Sure, pricing could change to become lucrative, but so far, there are no signs of that. Besides, that can happen anyway, with any company.

Microsoft is a very different company than they have been in the past. I can honestly say that it seems they have actually learned a few things along the way and have continued to shift their business plans to remain relevant.

You seem very upset over something that at this point, poses little real concern to the Emby project (or any other project for that matter). I get it that some people may not like that Microsoft bought GitHub, and projects are free to move to a different repository if they are uncomfortable with that. That being said, I don't think that anyone should be upset based on what service their favorite projects/apps decide to use.

There are many successful "open" projects out there that are owned and/or backed by big names in industry. It isn't the end of the world. Yet. If it becomes a real issue, projects would still have ample time to transition to a different service.

Microsoft only wishes it could have engaged in the level of villainy that Google now gets away with ... yet they're still the darlings of the internet.
