Amazon and Google are friends again

I would not say they are "friends." They are more like two three year olds that, after days of trying, you have finally got them, to play contently with the same set of blocks albeit at the opposite sides of the same room.

 

They are playing together because neither can gain an advantage by not doing so.

 

I would say they are acting on "enlightened self interest" but that would imply that any corporate entity actually knows what is in their best interest.

 

Corporations are run by conferences and:

I'm still wounded from the early days of this feud.

 

IMHO, Amazon fired the first volley that kicked the whole thing off. Google had to protect themselves, and I was caught in the middle.

 

We'll see how it goes.

I don't think it will take very long.

 

Amazon really wants YouTube on their Fire products. A working Amazon Prime app is already available on some Android TV products (Sony, Nvidia come to mind).  Not sure how long it will take Amazon to implement the cast functionality into the Prime Video app.

Nvidia had access to Prime Video since early 2017 (back when it was called Amazon Video) so it wasn't affected by the fallout, they had their own agreement with Amazon directly. Don't/Didn't know about sony though (maybe already had it through a SmartTV platform). Thanks for the link; wonder how long it'll be before Youtube is available on Amazon's devices - i don't have any so can't check on the actual devices; I think the Echo Show was mentioned as not being part of the compromise

Yes, Sony had a similar agreement with Amazon.

 

My issue was that Amazon pointed the finger at Google saying that it was them that wouldn't support. I had (have) a Nexus player for Android TV. You could sideload the Amazon video app, and it worked fine. At the same time that Amazon removed all Google products from their store with the introduction of the Fire products, they started actively blocking sideloaded apps... even though technically they worked fine. I have a support email about it somewhere in which Amazon basically said that it was Google that didn't support it. They did a similar thing with Chromecast, saying that "Google" doesn't support casting of Prime Video, which is why they stopped selling the devices. Again, that's an outright fabrication. Google doesn't care who implements cast support. That was on Amazon, and they could have done it easily with their resources. They chose not to while pointing the finger at Google. So I actually cancelled my Prime subscription for a while over that support email. The Wife Factor drove me back to it.

 

Don't get me wrong... They are both big companies, and I've always thought they needed to put on their "big boy" pants and figure it out. Hopefully they will.
