Emby Server on Nvidia Shield: "App not installed"

I downloaded the latest APK from:

https://emby.media/server-android.html

to my Windows 10 system.

I copied the APK file to the internal storage folder called "Download" on the Nvidia Shield.

I navigated to the APK file, and attempted to install it.  Using two different file managers, both have been given permissions to install from "Unknown Sources"

both attempted installs get to about 75% and appear to 'stall', finally failing with an error of:

App not installed:

Rebooting the Shield now to see if that produces any positive results at simply attempting to initially install Emby Server on the Nvidia Shield.

And, while that's booting... is Emby on the Nvidia Shield ready for prime time, or is it still an unstable beta that I shouldn't attempt to get the wife to buy off on?.. Does it fail the WAF test?

I have other hardware I can install on.  If I install on a windows system, will it it be easy to transfer settings and content to the Shield (or other Windows or NAS) later?

I've gnashed my teeth and had to listen to my wife complain (rightly so) about my attempt to get Plex Live TV & DVR up and running (utter dismal failure), HDHomeRun DVR (No Grid Guide, really?...and misses recordings)...and then over to Channels DVR (on both a Thecus W5810 Windows Server based NAS, as well as the DVR server running on the nvidia shield.  Gave up after not being able to obtain usable content no matter what I did, be it on the Thecus, or isolated to the Nvidia Sheild for Server and Client with a USB 3.0 6TB WD Mybook NAS)...

Am I going to experience same Gnashing of teeth and WAF failure with Emby if I attempt to install the Server the Nvidia Sheild?...  or on the Thecus W5810?  I do have a Dell Latitude E6430 that I could dedicate to the 'Emby Server Backend" if that is the better way to go.

At this point... I'm very close to just calling my TV provider, and having them send me a DVR...and calling it good.... (or re-installing Windows 7 on the Dell Latitude E6430 and going back to Windows Media Center... WMC has worked so very well for 10+ years.... I'd go back to Beyond TV.. but they abandoned the consumer space...  )

Reboot of the Nvidia Shield did not change the outcome of attempting to install the App.... I get "App not installed" after it attempts to install it... as described in my previous message

Hi, that's strange. Are you sure the download completed successfully? I've never seen this reported before.

The File Manager let's me view the content of the APK file, so I'm assuming it's not corrupt.  I'll try downloading it again, and see if it makes any difference.

on an unrelated note... I was not able to install the Channels DVR server or client software on my Shield (from the Google Play Store), until I downgraded the Play store....by uninstalling any Play store updates... I'll try that here.... just in case that is causing this issue (even though it's not coming from the play store)

Will the Emby Server app eventually become available in the Google Play Store?

So, on the next download, I opted to download directly to an existing share on the USB 3.0 Drive connected to the Shield.... (Not the copying it to a share on the Shield's internal shield)

Cardinal sin... changed two things.... and it worked... don't know if it was a corrupt file... and/or if it was saving to the external drive that resolved the issue.

So.. on to the next adventure.. setting it up, kicking the tires, and seeing if it can reliably do that thing called... recording a usable recording on the nvidia shield...and consume/watch it on the nvidia shield...  and once it see it do that... queue up Six recordings at once, and see if it can handle that....

I assume I can watch Live TV that is recording, and there is a Guide Grid of some sort?...

Diving in now....

Emby server would run better on a PC if you have one, either Windows or Linux.

You may well get issues trying to run the server on the Shield as well as using it as a playback device.

Each to their own though :)

"Better on a PC".. didn't work for me.  My Shield, playing live TV stutters and pixelates all over the place, as does playing it in a browser on my other PC....  (I uninstalled emby server from the nvidia shield, as it was an utter failure..,  and as shiny, and pretty and feature packed as the server appears to be, when I set it up on a Dell Latitude 6430 with an I5 proc, and 8 gb of ram, with a 500 GB Samsung Evo 860 boot SSD, and a USB 3.0 6TB external WD MyBook... I just can't get a usable live stream, yet alone a recording....

I'm beyond frustrated..

time to just go with a streaming service or tv provider dvr... at least the wife will be able to actually record something that is watchable.

Guess it's time to find the cancel subscription button... one day... was enough for me to give up on this project.

Have a good day,

Stephen

Obviously a problem with your setup/environment, as there are many happy users using a PC running Emby server and the Shield as a client.

If you're still willing to get it setup, then there are people here to help.

You are not alone :)

What are you using as a tv source? Sounds to me like you need an amp, a better antenna, better orientation/location, or all of the above.

I can do multiple records, while watching 4k amazon, or running other apps no problem.

While I do have occasional signal dropouts, that's because I'm between 2 apartment buildings and don't have LOS to towers.

Also, tuners all vary in quality, my hauppauge quad-hd pci card pulls in much more and a higher quality than my hauppauge usb, or the hdhomerun, but they all work better than the native tuners in my televisions.

Pretty much the same results, using live channels, emby, plex, nextpvr, tvheadend, or the homerun app.

However plex consistently looses track of my hauppauge tuners and needs to have them removed/added often enough that I dropped them.
