Is there a way i can get a huge volume boost?

Even if it means always transcoding the audio, i am fine with that. If so how can i do this?

I looked in the server setting and found nothing that will do this, unless i missed it.

Thanks

Turn up the volume...? :D

Seriously, can you please describe the issue you're trying to solve and maybe we will have some ideas.

There is the volume boost during transcoding you could use.

But... Presently this would only work if the Roku did not support the audio codec you attempt to play.

We would need to give you an option to always force transcoding of audio. Our profile will always copy audio whenever possible. A setting would be required to make this work for all audio tracks on Roku.

Sorry, no not for this.  People will turn it on and then we'll spend time in here troubleshooting why their audio is transcoding.

Let's see what the actual issue is.

I agree. There is sort of a way to enable this on a Roku. Press the * button on the Roku remote when playing the item and go to "Volume mode" change this from OFF to "leveling" to fix the low/high volume problem or set it to "night" to get those loud sounds softer. Make sure to switch this to OFF if you expect pass-through of any codecs. Using any of these volume modes will reduce your output to 2 channel stereo. Keep this in mind. It is possible to solve this on the Roku itself. We may have to simply do nothing but educate users about this feature.

My whole library is AAC 2.0, so there is never any transcoding. Simply turning up the volume does not work because to get enough of a volume boost i need to crank it way up, then loud seens are way to loud, I never had this issue on the Apple TV using there "reduce loud sounds" in the system settings. The volume was always nicely leveled regardless of audio type, so i could turn it up just fine. I do have the night mode enabled in the roku system setting but i don't notice it doing anything to help. I guess my other option is to run my whole library through myFFmpeg with a passthrough on the video and have it boost and normalize the audio, but that would be to much work. i have a massive library. I may also have to consider going back to the Apple TV again, its sitting boxed in my closet right now.

If you have a Roku Ultra or some of the newer Roku Sticks (I do not think all Roku sticks support this) there is a menu accessed by pressing the star * button that has an audio setting for limiting peak volumes and it works OK. The choices are:

<Off>
<Leveling> Which pretty much keeps all sounds withing a decent range. I use this setting.
<Night> Which sets a top threshold for loud sounds.

This has allowed me to remove my Terk volume leveler from my system. It works quite well for me.

Unfortunately many popular Rokus, like the Roku 3, that do not have this feature,

Yes i will try this tonight, but i had always had night mode enabled in the roku system setting. Did not know about the * until @@speechles mentioned it.

From your description I believe that <leveling> might work better for you.

The menu in settings for audio accesses the same setting as the star * button so your setting for night mode would be the same as <Night> that I mentioned.

Remember that <Leveling> levels the audio, both limiting the max and boosting the low volumes, while <Night> simply limits the maximum loudness.

In fact <Night> might make your problem seem worse.
