Really? I've been testing out using a raspberry pi with three users streaming at once and that seemed to work ok, so this would be a big jump in performance so I think it would work...

I think it just depends on what is being transcoded.

I could understand it from that point, but it seems to be ok for the content I have being sent out to the devices we have. This would work though, right?

For basic use with no transcoding, sure. But that GPU isn't very capable. That's why I asked about your requirements.

I see. We will be using it in house, which seems to be good. Also, I would like to view it outside network too.

Yeah, see that's what I'm talking about. Once connecting remotely, if you play on something that doesn't support the media or has low internet bandwidth, you'll need transcoding. Then you'll have problems.

Right, so why are the recommended requirements on Emby so low? What is the best hardware then? https://github.com/M...em-requirements

But, from the links for the computers, I sent you, it would certainly get the job done for local use, but not as well as external, correct?

I did not, thank you for that. Is it just PCs or other computers, such as Macs, etc?

If all computers have trouble with transcoding, is it really possible than with a good computer? Also, is it possible with the computers I linked you to?

It applies directly to how much processing power is available. On that dual core, you could probably squeak out one low yield transcode. But I can tell you, the more you use it, the more you'll want to use it. And your needs will increase. If you're only using your LAN, all good. But once you connect from outside, you have a number of variables that will need to be accommodated. Which requires more from your server.

Right, that makes sense. So, if you're saying I could go with this one https://www.microcen...ter-refurbished and be able to slightly squeeze out one transcode / one stream from outside the house?

Your best bet is to buy a cheap refurb, then jam in a new GPU, like an Nvidia GTX 1050, or something.

Ok, thanks! Is that possible with this one https://www.microcen...ter-refurbished or this one https://www.microcenter.com/product/601438/slim-desktop-computer-(refurbished) ?

Yeah, it's an old dual core. So maybe one 1080 transcode. Not HEVC or any of the more demanding codecs. It'll just choke on those.

Gotcha. So, out of those two computers I showed you, which one do you recommend again? This one, https://www.microcen...r-(refurbished)or this one https://www.microcenter.com/product/507001/optiplex-390-desktop-computer-refurbished ? I will add a new GPU, and then that should make viewing outside the house way better right? Also, how much do GPU cost for one for my use?

Go with the optiplex, it has a stronger CPU. And it should be able to fit a GTX 1050 with a low profile bracket (you should check on that, first). And a GTX 1050 will cost as much as that computer. Unless you want to try and grab a used on ebay. I have a GTX 1060 from ebay, and it's great.

Oh but wait! The CPU isn't strong enough. You should have at least a 300w PSU for that GPU

Ok, good! What is wrong the CPU not being strong enough?
