Sound cuts while watching series.

Dear community.

I have a problem that I have only experienced for some months. The problem is that it’s so random that it’s hard to find out when it will do it or when it won’t.

So far, I have only experienced this when I’m watching series. It does not happen when I watch movies.

As the title says the sound cuts off for a second and comes back on. I finally got it recorded so you can see how it looks and sound likes.

My system

Im running Kodi on a Intel NUC NUC7I3BNH.

With and HDMI over to the Denon Surround system.

The movies and series are streamed from a Synology DS918+

Im using kodi v 18 now. But it started long before that.

Emby 4.0.5 Also started long before latest Version.

My Emby server is an older NUC (cant remember the model ) but has always worked fine. Running latest Emby server. 4.0.2.0. (I haven’t resettet this because I don’t know how to backup my settings so I will get the same covers etc).

I have Tried the following to solve it:

Thinking it was the Denon system. I tried to reset the amplifier.

Changing my HDMI cables with 3 different cables. Ranging from a cheap cable to a cable that would cost around 50€.

On the NUC I have tried to reinstall Kodi, completely, which means also Emby has been reinstalled.

I have the same settings as I always had. Maybe the log will show something.

But after some time I have finally (or at least I think its Emby) that’s the culprit. And I think that because when I play files from VLC it wont cut the sound.

If I play the same file that cuts the sound directly from Kodi in Files it will play perfectly also.

I cannot confirm this 100%, but seems that if I play a file first via Emby, and it does the sound cutting, and then play it from Kodi files. Then it seems it doesn’t cuts the next episode if I change over via Emby again.

I’m lost here and hope this can be resolved. Because its really annoying to watching series where the sound cuts off from time to time. And as mentions It is so random that I can’t always replicate this 100%.

are the files where the sound cuts out transcoding?  attach a log from when it happened.

You should provide your Kodi log as well so we have a better chance of helping you out.

If you replay the same file, it doesn't happen again? The way your file is being played should tell us where to look.

Sorry both i thougt the log had been added. But aparantly im getting an error that says "Entity is too long."

Ive added it another way. The log is from yesterday where i was watching 2 episodes.

@Angelblue. I have tried if i play the file now and it happens. And i then stop it. Then it will do it again. But might not be at the same minut/second at the series where it does it.

But as mentioned it seems (i havent tested this extensively) that if i then play it via files after. And then via Emby again it seems to not do it. (but again not confirmed 100%).

You are direct playing so that rules out Emby. Check your audio settings in Kodi (system settings). I see an error from your log, that it's failing to initialized WASAPI?

Why does direct Play rule out Emby? Should i try to change it to native (i think the other one is called)?

My audio settings are set do wasapi default. I have actually also tried it to put it via Wasapi hdmi an info i forgot to give.

Because Kodi is loading the file directly. The file isn't provided by Emby, therefore, it's not Emby.

Using native wouldn't change anything. The file is directly played via smb.

Can you try direct sound to see if it still happens? This is the error from your log

18:11:55.490 T:3252 ERROR: CAESinkWASAPI::Initialize: Could not retrieve the default WASAPI audio endpoint. - (null)
18:11:55.490 T:3252   ERROR: CAESinkWASAPI::Initialize: WASAPI initialization failed.

Sure i can test it this evening.

But question where should i do it? At the top where it says audio decoder or under Passthrough?

Just if i change it under Passthrough i wont be able to use atmos sound. Then i can only get AC3 and DTS.

Also if you say that it cant be emby, why is it then only happening when i play it via emby and not directly from kodi under files?

Because this has been 100% like this.

play via Emby = Sound cuts from time to time

play via Kodi = no problems.

You can try native if you really want. The add-on uses the Kodi api to tell it to play your smb:// file. It has no effect beyond this. Kodi takes care to setup playback etc so there shouldn't be a difference between native and add-on playback.

If the file was provided via Emby, such that it uses http to point to your file, then yes, I could see it. But I'm telling you it's likely not Emby.

Keep me posted, if somehow it does make a difference. It would blow my mind and would expect you to provide Kodi debug logs for both scenarios to compare. :)

I would try to disable passthrough first. Then, try again with changing the audio output device

Hi Angelblue05

I watched full 2 episodes of Agents of Shield.

And i tried the following with the first episode: Setting both to Direct Sound, in both Audio output device and Passthrough.

With the second episode we watched : I tried putting passthrough back to Wasapi default.

On both occasions they played flawlessly.

Then i with same setting i took an older episode where i know the problem was. Nothing.

Then again same settings (DS and Wasapi) i took an episode of Greys Anatomy which was REALLY bad (the worst of all i have seen actually) and that did it, cut the sound like 20 secs in or so and did it 3 time i think it was withing a couple of minuts.

I then tried to put the passthrough setting back to Direct. Play the same one again, and presto not sound issue. But then it did something else. I did have it set to AC3 and DTS. But it hung up the system while i tried to play the file. And after stopping it and trying to play it again the sound was completely gone :(

Which made me have to restart Kodi.

So that was this nights experiende. I'm at a loss tbh.

Please take this log and post on the official Kodi forums. I don't think it likes Direct sound by the looks of your log. I'm not sure what's going on in your log, but it looks like a Kodi-driver-hardware related issue. They'll be in a better position to see what is wrong.

It seems to fail to detect an audio output in your log.
