Latest Movies - Since 4.x.x cannot get to update

3.5.x - Latest Movies section updated correctly when adding new content to library and doing a scan.

Immediately after 4.0.x and on 4.0.0.2 the section has only updated once on one day. Several different days of adding new content and nothing. Same meta data tool used as always to generate the XML.

The 'Date Added' field is correct in the XML file example:  <Added>22/02/2019 22:18:46</Added>

The Synology DS2415+ is set to United Kingdom correctly for region as is Windows 10 where meta data tool is run (used for years).

dates would be all UK format DD/MM/YYYY

Latest Episodes for TELEVISION library is updating and they all use the same meta data tool to populate the XML file.

This is a PITA :(

I believe i responded to you a couple months ago and gave you an explanation of some quirks with date added in xml metadata. I would suggest using nfo files.

Sorry Luke, I thought I had posted before but couldn't see in my content posted where it was.

It did work though previously on 3.5x, and it worked on 4.x - but I believe the day where it did work on 4.x was a single digit day rather than double digit.

Surely this is a bug as it previously worked and it still works on latest tv episodes?

I'm sorry but I just don't know at this point. I do not know enough about the xml metadata format to be in a great position to support it. There are many older tools that utilize this format and they all seem to use it different from each other. This is one of the reasons why we are leaving the xml format as legacy and community maintained.

Nfo isn't perfect either but it is slightly more standardized, and won't have these date parsing problems.

So I have also tried NFO now. Doesn't work either.

There is NFO and XML in folder, but the option on the library is to prefer NFO first.

Why do you feel that Nfo doesn't work? I have tested this and I'm pretty confident it works just fine.

I'm going to try a few more times with NFO. As I said TV works fine with XML or NFO.

I had both XML and NFO meta data files created by MCM as usual, but had the option to prefer NFO after I found XML was no longer working since 4.x.

I'll try this with JUST an NFO file for movies when I add content. Trouble is I NEED to keep backwards compatibility with MB 2.6.2 which uses XML for now too.

Keep in mind the metadata files have rules you need to follow. You cannot just choose your own date format and expect it to work.

Xml, as previously stated, is tied to your system locale settings, and this problematic therefore I don't recommend using xml.  This also is not easily changed because it's been this way for a long time.

The nfo date format must be yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss.

Tried many more example of NFO after server restarts. Still doesn't update this section.

Is there a cache for this I can clear that forces it to re-evaluate (without destroying everything else)?

Synology NAS server....

Thanks

I just use Media Center Master to grab the meta data and it auto creates the NFO file. It also creates the older XML file too which I've always previously used.

When I copy media file and the meta data to the NAS, I copied only the NFO file and not the XML just to rule out the XML file. The NFO is UTF-8 and the date format as you said.

We'd have to look at an example in more detail. Thanks.

Hi Luke,

One is the NFO and the other is the XML. Data created by MCM app for both.

The attachment uploader kept failing even if I renamed the files.

Example for Lethal Weapon 3 (created today) (both UTF-8):

NFO File (same name as movie file.nfo):

What is the date added in emby for that title? have you compared it to the date added for other movies?

Emby meta manager states 03/03/2019 which is same date as XML meta data files.

The NFO does not have a DATE ADDED type field in it. MCM doesn't create that field.

Emby is set as default of "File creation date" in its settings and the file was also created on this date.

Have you explored your emby user settings that can also affect latest media displays?

Luke - got an exact example now.

Today - without any changes to my usual meta data tool which does date added as UK format.

Its 12/03/2019 in UK date format, with UK as regional on Synology.

Scanned media in. It SHOWED UP THE LATEST MOVIES as being dated 03/12/2019. When I go into the meta data editor in Emby, it clearly states "12 December 2019"!

So it is something to do with month and day being swapped around.

If I then use meta data editor and put back to "12 March 2019" - the movies then disappears from the latest section UNTIL a lot are corrected and then they start to appear and the corrected ones which are technically older get removed in favour of the ACTUAL new ones scanned in.

When I corrected **ALL** the previous movies that were way into the future because of swapped months, the data all returned properly.

So this is a bug in your dates - that doesn't exist in the Latest TV section (even with XML). Its simply swapping the values around.

Thanks @@unisoft, that seems to support the suspicion I'd written about previously.

It's not quite a case of 'simply swapping the values around'.

More specifically, it will be due to date processing using a locale that has mm/dd as its format; most likely US.

The task now is to find out where this is happening and why - i..e why the date processing isn't using the system locale.

Hi James,

Weird thing is the "Latest TV shows/episodes" seem to be correct and they all use MCM as my meta data scraper tool (to XML, but did try NFO as well).

It used to work in 3.5.x for Latest Movies too.

Sorry my conclusion was simplistic in "swapping" the fields, and I think the locale identification is the issue as you say.

Thanks.....

I would suggest using nfo metadata files.

I did - that didn't APPEAR to work but that is likely to be a side effect which until you know how to resolve the original cause...................

Now that I know its because the section was filled up with loads of titles with dates far into the future, it is possible that NFO may import fine now because those have now been corrected to dates in the past using meta data editor.

Emby say they aren't getting rid of XML and as end of support for Windows 7 in 2020 and Windows 8.1 in 2023, more people will jump from Media Browser 2.6.2. The XML keeps an easier migration but the trouble is there are a handful of bugs that should be at least listed in the WIKI like I asked before to stop the frustration.

For example, the GENRES tag for television needs to be different from XML used in MB 2.6.2, the movie.xml file name for singular titles in a TV library must be series.xml in Emby, and the XML file name must match exactly (including the case) of the filename for the video.

With all the programming knowledge in the Emby team, to correct this in the XML add-in would surely not take long (like doing UCASE on the filename and meta data file name to convert all to one case before doing a compare). Not sure if this is in the plugin or main Emby code.

The more we can do to narrow it down the better. If it's not happening everywhere, then that suggests a difference in implementation *somewhere*.

The 'worst offending' libraries/implementations I've come across will flip the date components around when they are no longer valid.

This leads to odd behaviour such as the day and month being swapped, once the day becomes invalid.

          e.g. 13/12 = 13th December, 12/12 = 12th December, 11/12 = 12th November, 10/12 = 12th October, etc.

Hi James and Luke,

I've made no changes to my Synology or emby config.

All I have done is a Synology security upgrade and the Emby 4.0.2 and 4.0.3.0 releases.

It seems to all be working now. All I did was change a handful of movies that had dates for day and month swapped when library scan completed and that was enough for new titles being added to show again.

Given my meta data tool had also not changed version as not updated for a several months and it had always recorded UK date formats anyway its rather bizarre! I always use the tool and don't create the xml by hand.

Either an Emby release post initial 4.0 fixed it, but didn't show it did until the offending titles had dates corrected from being far in the future to past, or a Synology OS update had fixed something like date conversion or locale bug. Explains why the TV latest content wasn't affected and worked as no titles had dates in the future. That's because my movies were being added most at the moment for past few months than new TV series.

I'll monitor but looks like issue resolved. Thanks for help but thought I should update you as odd.

Thanks for the update @@unisoft, we'll continue to keep an eye on this behaviour and if you have any re-occurrences then do post back here.
