m3u8 vs .ts - Can someone clarify

So I was wondering -

I have generated and m3u file as I play around.

The links created were m3u8 and Emby did not seem to like them at all - wouldn't play or only gave a black screen

I found an entry I think where @@Luke said use .ts instead. Tried that, seems to work.

Why is it needed to make that little switch? Curious mind.

.ts acts as a single, continuous stream, so it is much easier for Emby to handle. However, .m3u8 comes in chunks, which means Emby has to constantly look for those chunks and put them together.

I've been told that a playlist needs to be in the mpeg-ts format if I want to get full recordings of shows, but I have no idea how to do that...

If I have a m3u playlist, how can I change the output to ts format?

This is the current m3u address:

https://nocords.xyz/pluto/playlist.m3u

The site where your stream(s) are coming from need to support it also. Pluto does. If a particular site does not support it the streams will of course error out.

Sorry, still don't understand how to make this playlist output in ts format.  Emby knowledge base tells me that ts output format will fix truncated recordings problem, but I am very stuck here.

Forgive the confusion.

I don't use: https://nocords.xyz/pluto/playlist.m3u but run a Docker for PlutoTV which I run thru a Channels DVR server and output the Pluto streams from Channels as .ts streams.

I don't believe you can do this (get .ts output) from https://nocords.xyz/ directly. Though you are able to use it if you run it thru Channels.

Does that clarify enough for you?

@kanipek

I have not used Channels DVR, how does this work with Emby exactly?

I do have the Docker for PlutoTV, and have the playlist and epg files imported into Emby.  But this results in it jamming every commercial break (something about ffmpeg and discontinuity issues with the stream).  Does this issue get resolved by running it through Channels DVR first?

How does Channels DVR get connected to Emby?

Thanks.

Yes all of the issues are solved - at least for me - By adding the PlutoTV M3U link to ChannelsDVR (via Custom Channels) you can output an (M3U (http://ipaddressofchannels server:8089/devices/M3U-PlutoTV/channels.m3u?format=ts) you will have PlutoTV channels that are mpeg-ts streams (versus HLS streams direct from Docker)

You add the M3U you output from ChannelsDVR as an M3U Tuner in Emby. I use the EPG directly from the docker for Pluto to import the guide data into Emby.

I watch plenty of PlutoTV using this method and I rarely see and issues at all. Your mileage may vary.

Does the info clarify the method for you? Any further questions I will be happy to try and answer for you.
