Okay tried inserting my IP addy in that link and didn't work either.

I think I'm in over my head here.

I ran a cmd netstat command to view ports in use and did not see 8096 listed.

Do you have an embyserver.exe process running in Task Manager?

After reinstalling Emby, I did see embyserver.exe and embytray.exe in task mgr.

However, while trying to open dashboard again to check, I got a "quick menu" error and the embyserver.exe process disappeared.

So I'm still stuck with cannot connect 8096 error.

Is there an older version of Emby that includes the installer that I could download to try and see if it works?

Emby does not do standalone installers.  All setup.exe files will attempt to pull the current release.

What version of Microsoft Visual C++ do you have installed?

Here is a screenshot showing those programs.
I think it added the 2015 version when I installed Emby Server.

(at least I remember a box popping up that indicated something like that).

What gets me is that Emby worked for a little while, then just stops.

And once it stops, I never get it going again.

This has been my experience twice now.

What is a "quick menu" error?

Canon printer software.

There are apps running in the background that should be deleted or at least stopped.

Catalyst Control Center

Cyberlink Library

Canon apps

Roxio

SmartMenu

If these aren't running you'll know they can't be causing problems. None iof the are needed anyway.

Well, I definitely use the Roxio and Canon programs.

As I stated, I was able to use Emby the first time thru for a little while and it worked fine.

All of these programs were installed when I was using Emby.

Same type of deal this 2nd or whatever time around now.

(I already tried removing the Canon software for a time period today and it did not fix the problem. That Quick Menu error came after restored back to the Canon software and apparently that part of the software did not restore properly).

It's not like Emby NEVER worked for me.

It worked with all of this stuff long before installed on my computer.

I guess that doesn't mean that one of them can't be interfering though...I don't know.

I try one more reinstall of Emby and I think I have found where the logs are now located, so I will post those.

If that doesn't help identify the issue, I'll just won't be able to use Emby with my new Roku TV.

I'll have to use Plex or something similar.

Thanks so much for trying.

You don't have to uninstall anything just stop the processes from running for s few minutes to see if it has an impact on Emby.

Something has changed. Emby didn't just stop working.

Alright...one last try...uninstalled some stuff and also uninstalled/reinstalled Emby.

Here is my task mgr processes at time of install:

And now I attach Emby install log as well as Emby server log.

When I tried to start Emby server, I again get a cannot connect 8096 error.

server-install.log

embyserver.txt

Clicking the tray icon isn't starting Emby server, it's viewing the server.

EmbyServer.exe isn't running. Can you click on the Emby icon in the start menu, wait about 30 seconds (maybe longer) then try the tray icon again?
Is there an error message when you run EmbyServer.exe?
I don't see anything obvious in the server log but I don't work for Emby.

I don't see EmbyTray.exe running either.

Also can you check windows event viewer to see if anything was logged related to this?

And please confirm - Windows update is fully up to date, right?

If the connection is 'refused' - then the browser had a reply on port 8096 - SOMETHING is running on that port ... ;)

type 'netstat -a | find "8096"

C:\Users\Emby_Service>netstat -a | find "8096"
  TCP    0.0.0.0:8096           emby:0                 LISTENING

If it's listening - then the server is running..

It will also tell you all the connected devices with an 'Established' status ..

Being W7 - I assume this is IE11 ?  - Maybe worth trying Chrome ?

I'll try to consolidate my answer to some of the questions asked:

---Yes...Windows Update is up to date.

---I usually use Google Chrome but I have tried with both Chrome and IE11 with same problem.

---When I try to open Emby Server from the start menu, I see embyserver.exe briefly appear in my processes but it pretty quickly changes to embytray.exe.

In fact at that point, I usually end up with multiple embytray.exe processes showed running after that happens (I get multiple Emby icons in my system tray).

Then if I click on any of the system tray icons, a window opens but I get the local host refused to connect 8096 error....and that's where I'm stuck at.

---Luke...I do see Emby related errors in the Windows Event Log. It looks like there is a .NET Runtime error just preceding Emby error when I try to open Emby.

I have to figure out how to copy or save the event log so I can paste it here...stay tuned.

Okay, so the system is terminating the server due to the .net error.

Can you see if there is an update to .NET you can install?

ok that's good in one sense, as it means that nothing ELSE is running on port 8096  ;)

Once you can get embyserver.exe operating, then emby should work and the above netstat will show 'established' like mine did.

Fingers crossed you get the .net issue sorted ..

.NET is part of Microsoft Visual C++, right?

I uninstalled all of my versions of that and installed the more recent Microsoft Visual C++ 2017 (x64).

I uninstalled Emby and reinstalled.

Started up Emby Server from the start menu...clicked on system tray icon and.....I STILL get the SAME host connect 8096 error.

When I check the Windows event log, once again there is a .NET runtime error related to Emby.

As far as a I know, I am not seeing .NET errors related to anything else that I am running.

Any ideas?

Do I need to install those older versions of the Microsoft Visual C++ back? (I guess I will find out if other programs on my system need them when I get around to trying to use them.)
