How do I get my Folder.jpg back into my media folders?

Ever since I upgraded to 4.x all my folder.jpg's were moved into the library/metadata structure, they had other functions besides being used for Emby. Is there anyway to reverse this?

I'd like them back in the media folders....

Hi, Emby Server wouldn't actually move your image files. Have you enabled saving images into local media folders for each of your emby libraries?

I did temporarily change certain settings while setting up 4.xx, whatever I did it moved all the folder.jpg's, I could hear a lot of hard drive activity but figured it was just doing the basic scanning. If I recall I set a pathway for C:/artwork under one of the settings. I think that is what trigger the move operation.

When I inspect the .nfo files they all point to the library/metadata folder under Emby.

@@JXL2112, well you could reconfigure the libraries to save images in local media folders, then refresh metadata on media titles and check the box to replace existing images. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

It didn't really work. I configured, local media folders, replace existing images but Emby still has some settings leftover that seems to interfere. I would need to delete all nfo files first, then start with new naked version of Emby and start from scratch. I may test one smaller library to see how long that takes. I have a good amount of manually set items that would take me months to replace.

Images are independent of nfo. You do not need to delete nfo files to get new images. Why do you feel that way?

All the nfo files have the "path" of the folder.jpg's under the library/metadata/xx, Emby seems to ignore the "local media folders" check box and puts the folder jpg back under the library/meta/xx folder. So scanning the library with "replace Images" doesn't move or place them in the local media folders as desired.

From a Emby standpoint image paths are not used from the nfo file.  I believe they are only used in Kodi.

Can you post your library settings.

I have tested a Refresh/replace images for a item that was database/centralized images and set library options to save with media and everything worked as expected.

The only way Emby will ignore your settings to save with media is if Emby does not have permission to write to the media folder.  So you may need to post a server log if this process is not working for you.

1. Fresh install of 4.0.2.0

2. Copy of small music folder...delete all the nfo files.

3. Carefully pick settings "use local media folders" etc.

Images are still NOT being saved to the media folder. The NFO files were written to the media folders though, so I don't know what permissions would be stopping the images....

Pathways:

M:\emby

M:\Music\Led Zeppelin\album

Sigh....

What is "M:\emby" suppose to be?

Are you only having issue with Music?  Artist folder is currently no longer used (except for folder view by require manual uploading images).  You still should get Album art though.

M:\emby is where emby server is installed. Music, TV shows, Films all don't work like your example above. Your example is exactly what I want.

There is a setting I just recently found and that had caused an issue for me for a long time:

For each library go to "Manage Library", turn on "Show advanced settings" and make sure "Download images in advance" is checked and the refresh metadata.

...oh...and I am missing folder.jpg. poster.jpg is created, but not folder.jpg  :(

you can try setting

<ImageSavingConvention>Legacy</ImageSavingConvention>

in your .\Emby-Server\programdata\config\system.xml config file

Yes this setting will use the old naming schemes folder instead of poster, backdrop instead of fanart.

But OP is about images not saved with media, unless I am missing something.

New Music should be the only content type that you will see a change in behavior (where metadata\images are store) depending on structure.

There were several issues that were causing problems.

1. Security Software seemed to lock up the partition that Emby was installed on.

2. Permissions left over when reusing a hard drive.

3. Several OS upgrades: (the media partition was created long ago)

4. Assumptions: I was expecting backdrops and logos to be saved to the local media folders for music....they only get saved to the meta/library/xx structure.

I will say that Emby is messy and redundant with all the image files it creates. Just adding 4 albums created a surprising amount of metadata during my testing.

The meta/library/xx structure is not Human friendly. I did find a way to find the logos and copy some back to the local media folders. Emby needs a sync feature or a export feature. Something that keeps the meta/library and local media folders in sync.

Right for some media types poster.ext is higher priority and that's why we save with that file name.

you can try setting

<ImageSavingConvention>Legacy</ImageSavingConvention>

in your .\Emby-Server\programdata\config\system.xml config file

@daedalus: Thanks for the hint.

+ @Luke: I would like to have both automatically though so that Windows Explorer and MetaX (load from NFO function) both pick it up as the folder.ext and still have the more modern poster.ext available as well.

@Luke sorry to dig up an old post, but I've been thinking about switching my media library from JBOD in Windows and building an UnRaid server to store media, which made me curious about metadata storage (which lead me to this post).

I'll be leaving my Emby Server on it's current Windows machine for the foreseeable future and just storing media on the UnRaid; I'd imagine this means I'd want to move all metadata, folder.jpg's, etc to a central location on the Windows machine to be able to browse the library faster, correct?

Currently there are posters, fanart, etc. as well as season, episode and movie .nfo files stored in all of my media folders, but the chapters, people, and it looks like a few other things are in the Emby-Server appdata folder. If I uncheck "save artwork into media folders" for each library and specify a custom metadata path, will this move everything except the media files themselves to my specified folder? If not, is there a way to do that? It seems like half the metadata is in media folders, and the other half is in appdata currently, when it seems to make sense to have everything in one location, especially if I'm switching to an UnRaid setup and still want smooth library browsing, etc.

Hi.  No, it will not and there is an annotation under that option stating that.

But, that is the opposite of what you want to do in your situation.  Storing these items next to your media is the most portable method.

There is an option to save the chapters (preview thumbs) in the media folders as well and people are not specific to any one media item so there really isn't any way to save those "next to your media".  What other items?

Is that something new? As only 10-second BIFs offer such option, Chapter markers (unfortunately and for reasons unknown) do not - or at least did not?

Sorry, you're right, that's only when using finer thumbs right now.
