Hi everyone. I hope you're doing ok. I can't install the Google Drive API. I floolowed the instructions on the Wiki page. I created the project but when I arrive on the Credentials page, which is here :

googledrive1g.png

I do have on the top right corner Credentials, OAuth consent screen and Domain verification but under these the page is blank and I just have Google's blue circle spinning forever and I can't click on OAuth consent screen. Anyone can help?

Thanks in advance

The link you gave me is exactly the one I followed yesterday. But it must have been a connection issue with Google because I tried again this morning and I succeeded. This guide to explain how to create the API is great. But if I may share my humble opinion, once it's done, it gets obscure. No more explanations on how to use it. First of all, and I'm probably wrong, I thought the plugin would allow me to access the videos that already are on my Google Drive. Maybe I misunderstood but that's why I say it's obscure. Now the plugin is correctly installed and I really don't know what to do. Could you please give me some explanations? I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Hello Fanofscifi,

Glad you got it setup.  Yes right now the wiki article only covers how to setup Google Drive for use with syncing but doesn't cover how to use it at all.  Essentially it will work the same as other sync jobs in which Emby make a COPY of the media you have on your Emby Server to either a device, another folder location or a cloud provider (in this case Google).

This is not going to magically make available to Emby files you already have stored in Google Drive.  It will however allow files to be streamed from the cloud drive vs your local server for anything synced and in a format usable by the client.

I plan on getting a new article added shortly to the wiki system to cover an intro to syncing.

Thanks a lot for your answer things are a lot clearer. I thought the plugin would allow me to access my files on my Google drive just like in Kodi with their addon. But Kodi on my Nvidia Shield TV has been very buggy more than once and now it won't open anymore. I really like Emby, it runs flawlessly for me and the app is available directly on my LG TV so it's even one less device to use. So I just have one question. If I sync files from my server to my Google Drive, once it is synced, is it possible to delete the local files from my hard drive? Otherwise it would mean that the files are stored twice, both on my hard drive and on my Google drive. That would be a little ridiculous for me. No offense !!!!

Ok thanks. It's all clear now

What syncing does is always make a COPY of the media to some other location that makes it faster/easier to access.  This can be a mobile device so you can play back your media offline or without using mobile data.  A could drive so that the remote client can stream the synced content without using your server upload bandwidth, etc.

In all cases the media STAYS local on your Emby server so that you can access the media in your house or be able to sync it to other devices.

But something that hasn't been mentioned and what I think you might be interested in is the ability to ONLY STORE media in the cloud.  This can be done with the help of the 3rd party provider software such as Netdrive http://www.netdrive.net/ which works pretty well.

In a nutshell Netdrives allows you to create a drive letter that mounts to your cloud drive.  Emby then treats the cloud drive like any other local drive.  You could try playing with the evaluation version to see if this meets your needs if this is what you are trying to accomplish.

Just know that at any time all your cloud storage could go "boom" as relying on a cloud provider takes this out of your hands.  I've lost over 100 TB on OneDrive, Amazon, Bitcasa and Google in the past when they changed policies.

I added a brief introduction to Emby Sync here https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Sync-Introduction which helps to clarify what it does and doesn't do.  I also modified this page https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Sync to be a little more clear that the media must stay locally on the Emby Server as well.

I'm working on putting together a couple of walk through of using the different sync features.

Indeed, Netdrive seems interesting and cheap. But I understand your concern regarding cloud servives changing their policies regularly. We were informed by Google in late 2018 that their policies were about to change again in january 2019. And not that there's anything dirty on my GD but they clearly mentioned that they would share their informations on our accounts with governments of the countries where we live if requested. Nowadays with all that film industry trying to fight piracy, better be careful. So I deleted a lot of files from my GD and I had the stupid idea of trusting a site claiming that Pdrive was a great alternative and worked great with Kodi. Not even 15 days later my account was already deleted for "infringement". Now I think I have a good compromise. Of course I keep a physical copy of my films and I watch them locally with our dear Emby of course and the really good ones I store them on sync.com who have 2 advantages. They're located in Canada, they have very strong laws on the respect of privacy. And sync.com work with zero knowledge encryption. Meaning that when you upload a file, it is encrypted on the fly. So it takes a lot longer to upload but once it's uploaded it's encrypted and with that zero knowledge encryption system, they can't sneak in.

But i still have several homemade files stored on GD that I want to be able to watch whenever I want and Netdrive seems promising. I'll give it a try and I'll let you know. Thanks anyway

As mentioned above, a tool like Netdrive or WebDrive works as a productive, efficient, and user-friendly way to connect to Google Drive and manage files. It isn't exactly what you asked for, but it's a great alternative that I, like other users, have found works quite well.

Hello guys,

I've tried Netdrive and it's really a very good alternative. It does what I want. I really wanted to thank you all for the explanations and the advice.

Now what's your opinion? I've tried Netdrive but not Webdrive. Is one more reliable than the other? Or are they both on par?

I have tried both products, and they are both solid in my opinion. WebDrive is a little faster, though. I know that WebDrive offers a free trial, so it might be worth trying it out to see which works better for you.
