Freezing While Watching Live TV - Skipping Past Live

In Emby Theater on Windows 10, whenever I watch a live program I'm able to pause and resume, and skip forward past commercials up to the real time point. But if I skip forward past real time, the video will freeze and often I wont be able to rewind back to before real time. Instead I have to exit out completely and start watching the channel again, which then clears out the buffer of recorded live tv I had built up. Is this a known issue, any workarounds?

Hi, why would you try to skip past real time?

I'm not sure why it would matter because i would think the application would handle such an attempt by simply playing the show at the live point rather than freezing. But this isn't something I'm trying to do intentionally, it's like if I'm watching delayed tv and i skip through commercials and catch up to live tv, that's when this happens.

I should have mentioned this also happens on Shows started from the TV Shows library but that are still recording. Once you catch up to striking distance, if you "accidentally" skip past the actual live mark unpredictable behavior can take hold. I'm on the beta channel if that matters at all, maybe this is a beta issue if no one else has experienced this.

I started a recording of NCIS - New orleans. I let it run for a couple minutes and then started playback on my Nvidia Shield.

I was able to skip forward and back using the right and left arrow keys with no problem. However, when I got close to the end, I skipped forward 30 seconds which would be into the future, playback locked up and I had to exit the video.

It's hard to tell when you are close to the end because the timeline shows green past the point where playback locks up.ffmpeg-directstream.txt

Hi.  It isn't actually skipping past the live time but the stream does seem to freeze if you get too close to live.  I've even restricted it to not getting within 60 seconds of real time but the stream still freezes.

BTW - you should be able to simply back up 10 or 20 seconds and it will start playing again.  We are still looking into why it cannot play properly "right on the edge".

OK. That makes sense. That's why I see part of the timeline past where it freezes. I tried backing up but no luck. I'll give it another try when I get home.

It appears that my server is transcoding the live stream. Maybe that is part of the problem. I think that the shield is capable of direct play of the live mpeg2 stream.

I noticed that my server would transcode recordings saying that the .ts container wasn't supported on the shield. My post processing script adds channel markers and remuxes the recording into an mkv , just a straight copy with no encoding.  The resulting video shows direct play when I pop up the nerd tools window.

This has been reported prior as well in the Android TV beta forum.

Recent Android TV beta releases have added the 60 second thing ebr mentioned, but it doesn't really help.  Issue is still there only now you are delayed 60+ seconds which isn't ideal for sports.  It sucks to get a PM or ticker update on your phone for an event that you're watching "live" which hasn't happened yet.  :(

I suffer this on NVdia Shield using Emby server 4.0.2.0 with HD Homerun.   Live TV playback will pause for a second or two, continue, them sometimes just freeze up. Signal quality is strong and if I use the HD native app, it plays live TV fine.

Have devices running on ethernet on the same VLan.

Does seem as if streaming live TV directly does not work. If I change to this setting in Emby (Play live TV directly), I just get the spinner when I try to tune to a channel.

Right, I need to add to this.... I found an IP address conflict on my network which was causing my Shield to drop off the network, hence the freeze. Can't get direct play from HD Homerun, but then not too fussed about this as my system now barely stutters during initial playback and not all after playing for a while.

Using:

large buffer size

QOS on 802.1 on my hub VLAN

Transcoder path to my SSD via USB

More than happy with Emby and hoping things will only get better... right now surpasses Plex by a mile or more
