No automatic sync?

Kodi 17.6

Emby Add-on version: 4.0.1

OS: LibreELEC 8.2.5

For a couple of years, I had Emby sync media on startup when starting Kodi, I also had a shortcut to the "manual sync" function in the add-on. After the recent update (at least recent for me, I updated and was told to rebuild the database about 4-6 days ago), it seems some stuff has been shifted around internally, and now, in order to update the library, I have to go into the Add-ons Settings -> Manage Libraries -> Update Libraries -> *choose the library*, the older option I used it gone, so I assume this is what I have to click.

This leads to what seems like a full library refresh though: I see every TV show and episode go by in the loading dialogue, like they're synced for the first time, was it always this way? What I want is to watch my newly downloaded episodes of a TV Show, am I choosing the wrong option?

But the main problem is that I don't get sync on startup anymore, do I have to set it up in the add-ons options somehow? I'm using Native Paths, could this be a problem?

Thanks in advance!

You need to install the Kodi companion server plugin for automatic startup syncs. Or update the libraries, launch emby for kodi > manage libraries > update libraries.

The reason for the change is the update libraries happen per library. Not all libraries need to be updated. Received a lot of complaints in the past there was no way to stop the start up sync, etc.

Quick question: I too used to use "manual sync" in the addon settings but that seems to be gone now. So the new alternative would be as described by @@halfer ? Add-ons Settings -> Manage Libraries -> Update Libraries -> *choose the library* ?

How do you install the Kodi companion server plugin?

Thanks.

It's done from Emby's web interface. Open up the web interface in your browser, go to Settings, you'll find "Plugins" on the left nav under Expert heading. Click on "Catalog", "Show plugins for:" should be "Emby Server".

You'll find Kodi Companion in the list.

Thank you. It's been a bit of a nightmare trying to find that little nugget of info.

For sure. The crazy thing is I installed and forgot about it. And when I mistaken thought I had to install it again, I read the wiki that @@Angelblue05 posted and it still took a bit before I realized it's the Emby's web interface—I'm so used to interacting within Kodi I thought it was done there.

I think some of us who don't actively use Emby's web app and only interact with Kodi, assume it's an addon like "Emby for Kodi" that's installed within Kodi! That's usually where I look first.

I've been using Kodi for Emby & Kodi Companion for well over a year. I could be wrong but I don't recall ever updating my library in the past. When a new episode or movie was added into Emby, Kodi would update with that information automatically. No manual scan or reboot was needed. Today when I add an episode or movie I'm forced to update libraries or reboot before I see the update in Kodi.

Am I correct on the statement above and the process has changed?

My issue with the Emby > Manage Libraries > Update Libraries process is that it re-scans everything and takes 20-30 minutes to complete with my library. I find it much quicker to reboot the device or run Emby > Restart Emby for Kodi and let Kodi Companion update my library.

Am I doing something wrong or is this working as designed?

Here are my versions that I'm currently running.

Emby for Kodi Version = 4.0.5
Kodi Companion = 2.0.9.0

Example: I added a new TV Episode to my Emby library and update the library.  I verified I can see the new episode in Emby, but when I go into Kodi the new episode is not displayed. I can get it to display by updating my librarary (which takes a long time to complete and does not appear to use kodi companion), reboot kodi which runs syncs with kodi companion on startup and is quick, or run a Restart Emby for Kodi which is quick.

When I go into my addons in kodi > select the Emby for Kodi addon > select update is list 4.0.5 as being the latest version.

Was Kodi running when you added the new episode? Do you get any live updates?

If Kodi was running, that usually means something is up with the websocket connection.

When you restart Kodi or the add-on, does it then appear?

Can you provide a Kodi log capturing this issue?

Yes Kodi was running and no I did not receive any live updates

I though in the past it appeared after a reboot or restart emby for kodi but this time it did not. I had to go into my Emby addon > Bring up the context menu of my TV Shows and run an Update Library for the new episode to appear.  In the past I'm sure I've seen a banner across the top saying it's processing updates.

This is the episode that was added after the Update Library.  The entire log file has been attached.

Looks like the add-on is unable to connect to your server websocket. Are you using some kind of reverse proxy?

I do have a reverse proxy setup that I use when accessing outside my network, but I'm using the IP address of my Emby server since I'm inside the network.

For some reason, this error is raised when trying to connect to your websocket

12:15:18.034 T:980 NOTICE: Emby.emby.core.ws_client -> ERROR:: [Errno 10061] No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it

That's preventing you from receiving updates while Kodi is running.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the kodi companion plugin on my Emby server. When I start Emby I'm not seeing that error in the log files.  Since Emby makes a connection to Kodi Companion on startup does this mean I might have fixed my issue?  I'll try adding a new episode or movie shortly to verify.

No it has nothing to do with the add-on nor with the plugin. The server communicate events via the websocket. Check your firewall, reverse proxy, etc.

I have my reverse proxy in place. But if it's not going via your reverse proxy, then something else is blocking that connection.

The websocket connection looks like:

ws://{emby-server}/embywebsocket?api_key={emby-token}&device_id={device}

nginx

		#Allow websocket
		proxy_http_version 		1.1;
		proxy_set_header 		Upgrade $http_upgrade;
		proxy_set_header 		Connection "upgrade";
