Add m3u for live tv to server.

Recommended Posts

Hi , long time plex user , have purchased a "premium" account to try emby, in particular "live tv ( IPTV).

Been on hours trying to add an m3u url , I know it should be a doddle , I ,ve done it 1000s of times before elsewhere.

When I click on "live tv" ,I only get an "m3u tuner"  option which i assume is not what i want for IPTV ?

I can't find an "add playlist " option ?

Looking at the wiki it says this :

  • Configure your TV Tuner(s) or M3U based IPTV sources,
  • could someone please post where i add my "m3u" url ?
  • Am using emby server on iMac.
  • Update , I  seeon wiki under m3u that in fact I am enetering my url in the correct place however it appears emby isn't reading it ?
  • My subscription channels are supplied in "tinyurl.com"  URL, which works fine elsewhere , is this an issue for emby ?
  • OK tried with file rather than m3u and channels have loaded , however my epg is an xml not a file.
  • But even more importantly all channels are listed together , is there no category option in emby ?
  • This is a deal breaker for me.

Thanks for that reply , Bazinga , I subscribed for a month , to test the server. Sadly if my URL's wont work even more importantly "channel groups" are not an option in IPTV/live tv , emby is not for me, once again thanks for prompt reply.

You mentioned your M3U list contains redirects using tiny url.

This may be an issue.  I've not seen anyone else try this.

I'm going to send you a PM in order to try and help you privately.

Thanks cayars  for your help , just to clear this up , I managed to use an m3u and xml from a different provider and am now sorted ( the tinyurl.com links were the issue).

I added an m3u url to watch live tv. But the "play to" feature does not work with these url's.

Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

Wow quick response time, cheers.

It's not a problem but just a general question if the "play to" feature also works with m3u url's in general or not.

I will try to specify my question according to your  "How to report a problem" . I just tried to keep it a simple general question.

Thanks

Does anyone have experience with the live tv setup in Switzerland?

Most channels are not available over-the-air, sat is not an option for me, and cable is disappearing more and more. Only real option would be IPTV. The problem is that most tv providers provide IPTV that is only accessible with their own set-top-boxes.

Is there a legal way to obtain iptv mu3 url's anywhere? Or how do others do this?

Thanks

I am looking into DVB-C as an alternative, if I can not get IPTV working...

Does anyone know if there are any DVB-C tuners that would work with Emby server on Linux?

If I can find a hauppauge tuner that works with debian linux, would it automatically also work in the debian x64 linux version of emby server? or are these 2 different things?

HDHomeRun Tuner is not sold anywhere in Switzerland, and I could not find out if it would actually work here.

In Spain, the same happens, over-the-air television is just rubbish, satellite television is fine, but the provider's equipment is necessary and IPTV also requires the ISP's equipment. Luckily, there is an ISP in Spain that broadcasts DRM-free IPTV using multicast UDP streams. But more and more channels use DRM and in the long run I think all channels will (I hope it will take a long time). In my area, there are no DBV-C services available, so I can't help here.

If you have satellite TV service available not linked to the provider's equipment, you can use an Enigma 2 receiver (such as vu +) and with a proxy expose channels as a m3u playlist, using your card subscription.

Thanks for your input. Cheers.

It's a great shame, most people here watch TV with a set-top-box from the provider with integrated voice-assistant. Unbelievable. Where is the good old TV signal that I can use however I want?

Would love to use emby also as a TV server. Seems to be a difficult subject. Although we still have DVB-C here, so the question remains what tuner could work with emby on linux.

Here's a list of linux supported tuners:

Another option would be to use an Enigma 2 box with a dvb-c tuner, there are some great vu + branded gear. I have done tests with satellite receivers and it works very well. There is a plugin that acts as a proxy exposing the channels as an iptv playlist.

I am getting 60 channels over DVB-C for free from my provider, so I am going to try this.

1. The Hauppauge WinTV-soloHD Tuner should work under Linux. Does this automatically mean that emby server would detect it natively? Or would I need to install something like TVHeadEnd for it to work?

2. As an alternvative, if I install the tuner and TVHeadEnd-server on a separate device, like a RPI, could emby-server somehow access it?

Great thanks. Last question: Can emby server somehow access a TVHeadEnd-server running on a separate device on the network?

If you create an m3u in tvheadend and ensure the addresses for each channel include the correct ip/host name

Yes, you need a tuner, but it's a virtual tuner. Just select add m3u tuner and set your m3u playlist. No physical tuner needed.
