Subtitle issues

Since moving from Plex to Emby (v 3.5.3), I've run into two issues with subtitles when playing content on my Roku, and both seem to happen only with .mkv versions of The Man in the High Castle that I've downloaded. The first issue is that English subs aren't displayed by default, something that I don't recall experiencing with Plex. The second issue is that when I try to manually enable them and select English, I'm faced with a huge list of languages to pick from, with no way to move the list up or down to find where English is (I can scroll the visible list, but once the cursor is off the screen I have no idea what language I'm picking). Has anyone else seen this?

Hi there, have you configured the subtitle preferences for your emby user?

I've tried several different settings. I did see subtitles for one show once, but I don't remember which show. The Man in the High Castle seems to give me the most issues though. Come to think of it, True Blood is another one, also an .mkv.

I've attached a screenshot from MKVToolNix showing a partial list of subs for the Man in the High Castle episode. Eng is default and forced, what settings do I need to have in Emby to make them work?

Log in with web app (with same user), click on user icon and select "subtitles".

Thanks, but I've tried every setting under subtitles and Emby won't display them unless I manually select them while playing back on the Roku. I don't mind doing that, but as you can see from my screenshots I can't scroll to select English.

Lets start with the users subtitle settings in the web client.

This is what they're currently set at.

EDIT: This is looking more like an issue with the files. I remuxed the episode of High Castle and stripped out all but the English subs. After setting Emby to play only forced subs, I finally see them when applicable. I don't really want to have to remux all the episodes I have, but I guess if that's what it takes, I will. However I'd still like to point out again that I never had an issue with subtitles when I used Plex.

And these subtitles are being recognized correctly for the media in Media Info section.

I'm sorry but they are two different pieces of software. You say it's a problem that subtitles are not playing default, is it actually a problem, or is it actually correct behavior if we are honoring the default flags in your video files?

If you want the subtitles to play by default, regardless of the embedded information, then we have settings right there in your user preferences to allow you to do just that. You just have to explore them a little and find the one that fits your needs. Looking at the available subtitle modes we have, I see at least two of them that could potentially accommodate what you are looking for.

Don't get me wrong, I understand that these are two completely different pieces of software. I only mention because they are the competition, and my experience with sub handling was good.

I don't want subtitles to display all the time, I only want them when the spoken language is something other than English. In one of my first screenshots you can see the subs from the episode in question, and the settings for Eng are on and forced. Those are the same settings I used when I remuxed it. The only difference is that I removed all the other languages. Could the large amount of subs be tripping up Emby?

If that's what you want, i believe the subtitle mode you want to select is "Smart".

Yes, as Ebr suggested, there is an option to do just that. Each option has help text explaining what it does. You just have to look through them and find the best one for you. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.

I did try each option the other night when playing High Castle, but none of them worked until I remuxed it. I even backed all the way out of Emby on the Roku and back into the episode after each change but still no subs.

Thanks for that. I ended up remuxing the last 4 episodes of High Castle for now. I have a few seasons of True Blood that I'm still watching, if the next one ends up not displaying subs I'll post a reply.
