Option to turn off idle app closing on Emby Beta

Hi Guys,

I was the one that requested the auto-play continuous streaming late last year and that has been working flawlessly on our Roku TVs. One issue I am having is that the Emby Beta app will close and return to the home screen after a period of time. I'm sure this is in place to save on bandwidth/energy? In my case would it be possible to add a setting on the Emby Beta app to ignore the idle timeout? I have scoured through all the settings on the Roku TV itself, and turned off screensaver/auto turn off. So the TV is on 24/7, but the Emby beta app will automatically close itself even though content is still streaming on the TV.

Any thoughts into this? The searching I found is that it's an app-based setting not necessarily a Roku setting. I could be wrong, but that's what their official support claimed.

Thanks again guys,

Jason

Hi.  There is no auto logout setting in this app.  It sounds more to me like the app is shutting down for some other reason.

If you have the debug options turned on, turn them off.

Very odd, currently the debug settings are already off. I have also made sure i'm on the latest Emby Beta app.

~

My current procedure is to go to my playlists, say 'shuffle all' then go to the more options and select repeat all under the advanced playback. Nothing else out of the ordinary, it shuffles all my content in that playlist endlessly. However the app will simply close after a period of time (which I haven't nailed down exacts yet, but somewhere between 12-18 hours (perhaps sooner) it will be back to home screen of the Roku without any intervention of the remote.

Let me know if you want more details or have an idea for me to try.

Thanks for the quick response

I remember reading on some other site (maybe Plex Maybe Roku or maybe one of the others that I have dealt with) that Roku was implementing a requirement that an app that is not actively streaming be automatically closed. I do not remember if it was supposed to be the app that was to implement that function or if it was Roku that was going to do it but I do remember a good deal of discussion about it.

That was just a preface to me saying that my Roku 3, that I watch from bed, will, from time to time if I fall asleep, return to the Roku main scree. It returns to where it would be with a single press of the home key.

I thought that I might be pressing home in my sleep but sever times it has done that with the remote resting on my bedside table.

It seems to take some time after the movie ends but I am quite sure it is happening.

I am using the beta Roku app and my Roku 3 is connected wired.

I do not see it on my Ultra in my living room but it never sits idle for a long period of time inside the Emby app.

Personally I do not consider it a problem but I do see how it could be for some but if Emby has not implemented it then it would not be possible for Emby to fix it.

I think it may either be the Roku itself shutting down (after a long period of no user interaction) or, perhaps, a crash due to running out of memory or something because of streaming constantly.

My test Roku will sit for days on the Emby home screen without ever exiting but I've never tried to leave it streaming for 12+ hours.

It is either an update to the Emby roku app occured while the device was in "non-use" mode, or the firmware updated while it was in this mode.

This happens so that you don't need to use the "update software" button of the Roku. This is by design by Roku themselves.

Which Roku are you using. I have noticed some pretty glaring differences in the way Emby behaves between my Roku 3 and my Roku Ultra.

Both work pretty well but the Ultra is in a lot of ways much more stable when running Emby than either of my 3s.

Both this issue and the one involving the * menu during playback only seem to happen on my 3s. My Ultra is rock solid even though I use it more than my Roku 3s.

One more thing is that all my Rokus are connected wired to my network.

The exit to the main screen I have seen does not happen during extended play but rather after my Roku 3 has been idle doing nothing for an hour or two.

Lastly: The Emby streaming playback and Emby menus are absolutely stable on all my Rokus which is why I think it is the Roku 3s rather than the Emby app that is causing issues.

As a further note my Ultra does exhibit this behavior as well. I previously though it did not but I had just not left Emby open and not streaming long enough.

I also have confirmed that this is a Roku issue not an Emby one because on my Roku threes it also happens when Plex and other apps are paused for an extended period.

I guess Roku made this happen to force people to actually look at the ads they have on the main page. For me at least it did not work. What it has done is force me to begin to use my Raspberry Pi for my Plex audiobook playback.

I cannot use Emby for that as Emby does not support video files with no video part and does not have decent support for resume/FF/RW in audio files. It is the only thing I am still using Plex for.

My Pi is inferior in a lot of ways for that use but it does not exit after extended pauses.

Emby is fine for everything else on my Rokus and it is what I use for all my video consumption and the exiting after extended non-use does not impact me because all my other usage does not involve long pauses or non-use periods.

I just wish Roku had not screwed up the way I want to use them. :(

Thanks for everyone's replies, everything seems to be pointing to the Roku software automatically kicking out any app over a period of time (annoying to be forced to something like that) can someone recommend me something that I can implement to utilize Emby's great streaming, but use different hardware/software? I'll be hooking it up to a TV for extended amounts of playback.

Thank you,

Jason

You could try our Android TV app, for example on the popular Nvidia Shield:

https://emby.media/emby-for-nvidiashield.html

You know if Emby just had audio file FF/RW/resume I would use that or the Fire TV app for my audiobooks and completely abandon Plex.

In general I have come to like Emby over Plex in all areas except this one glaring weakness.

I know that there are a LOT of parts that are needed for full audiobook support but just having the control support I mentioned, even as limited as it is in Plex, would be most welcome.

The exiting problem on long pauses on Roku has caused me to move back to my Fire TV for audiobook playback but, because of the lack of good audio support in Emby I have to continue to use Plex for that purpose.

I'm almost positive the Fire TV app does support FF/Rew of audio...  You have to use the dedicated remote buttons though.

Strike that.  I remember having that at one point but I guess I removed it in favor of the consistent behavior of moving to the next track.

Yes. All the apps I use have, at one time, had FF/RW/Resume support in audio files but now none of them do. It seems to have been removed from everywhere.

I know I am in the minority but I do NOT need or want "track" support or anything else like metadata for audiobooks but I do need FF/RW/Resume for the way I like to use my audiobooks. I just really wish we could have both the kind of functionality most people seem to want and the kind I want. Maybe an audiobook library could support FF/RW/Resume and a music library could support the track functionality.

@@speechles I saw you post something, then shortly after delete it. Is the Roku 'return to home' script something that Emby Beta could counteract?

I've been doing some digging online and came across a couple posts in particular that are interesting.

This last picture is from the Roku SDK documents. My gut feeling is that by default they force apps to kick you back to the home screen to increase their ad revenue since the ad system is hard-baked into the Roku ecosystem. I would LOVE if emby could implement something to subvert that in the form of a setting that would stop the automatic home screen push (while videos are still playing if nothing else! I would be totally fine if that was a premiere member only thing as well)

At this point, I will need to add a second device to be able to stream my content 24/7 without the app automatically closing after a period of time.5c463ac4d8ef8_emby3.jpg

Got a quick update to this thread. I am running the Emby Beta app on a different Roku integrated TV TCL and it has currently been running for 20 hours without stopping 0_0'

....

So uh... i'm going to try a factory reset on the one that is closing and see if it gets better.

Thanks

Your TV may not be running the latest software or it may be that Roku's feature to exit out to the main screen is disabled on Roku TVs but a factory reset on your regular Rokus will not prevent the unwanted behavior. Roku has added that to their system and it is there to stay.

I should add that, they are both TCL integrated Roku TV units. I will compare versions as i'm curious

The one TCL TV so far is streaming without interruption like I mentioned before. I'll continue to monitor and see how long this will last.

Thanks for your responses from before!
