I have an IPTV provider that I can choose to use ts or m3u8 with. I have tried both formats and no matter what I do I can't get the Emby app to direct play on my Shield TV. It will direct play on my iOS devices and windows devices. No matter what I do it has to remux on the Shield. Why would this be?

I have attached a picture to show the stats for nerds of a stream

Hi, have you checked the server dashboard to see the reason for this? Click the i (info) icon on the active device.

The i (info) icon in the Emby app just shows the program details. The is no i icon on the device streaming the stream on the server dashboard. It does say on the server dashboard that my Shield is Direct Streaming which contridicts what the app is doing according to stats for nerds.

What might have happened is it may have tried to play direct, and then the video player reported an error with the stream and it automatically switched to transcoding.

Let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. thanks !

This happens on every stream i attempt every time. It will never direct play any stream on my Shield TV Emby app. This has been happening even on version 3.5 before I upgraded. Its specific to Android TV. As i said all other platforms are able to direct play the streams.

Also, i noticed i do not get the i icon for the Shield on the server dashboard. I do see the i icon when i play the stream on my iPhone. I have included a screen shot to show the differences on the dashboard.

This is the info when i click the i icon for the iPhone:

Direct streaming
The media is compatible with the device regarding resolution and media type (H.264, AC3, etc.), but is in an incompatible file container (.mkv, .avi, .wmv, etc.). The video will be re-packaged on the fly before streaming it to the device.

Direct Streaming a file uses very little processing power without any loss in video quality.

can you provide an emby server log, containing playback from both iphone and the shield, and let me know at approximately what times you did both of those? thanks.

No, that option isnt checked. Because if it was checked then i cant do rewind and pause functions. I do know that if i do select the direct stream option it doesnt remux on the Shield. But that defeats the functionality of Emby.

Okay, then that is your answer.  It isn't direct streaming because you have turned it off :).

To get rewind and pause functionality on live streams, we must remux them through the server to a seekable container.

Thanks.

I get rewind and pause on all over devices except the Shield though. Those devices arent doing a remux. All my windows and iOS devices are direct streaming with rewind and pause functionality in tact.

Yes those apps are using a different player (that doesn't support some very important TV functionality).  However, they also will limit your ability to rewind a lot more than this app will I believe.

So your saying the playback on the Shield is doing so by design? That ExoPlayer doesnt support pause and rewind with a direct stream, but the windows player and iOS players do support that functionality natively? Seems like maybe the Shield app should look into a different player if all other devices can support this without doing a remux.

Are you encountering an actual problem with the playback that we need to look into addressing?  Or were you just wondering about the playback method.

Thanks.

I can't say for sure its  causing any issues, except using more resources on the server to do the remux rather than direct playing the stream.
