vdatanet 1549
I am building my new server to abandon my slow NAS. I think I will not need much power, since at most I will have 5 clients without transcoding, usually it will be 3, I prefer to invest in storage instead of power. My idea is to use an AMD Ryzen 5 2600x in an headless Ubuntu Server 18.10. Does anyone use this processor in Ubuntu? I have heard that there may be compatibility problems between Ubuntu and Ryzen. I am hesitating between choosing Intel or AMD. If I had to choose Intel, I would choose an Intel i3-8350K. Regarding storage, I'm going to use a ZFS storage pool, with as many disks and as much capacity as my purse allows. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! BAlGaInTl 279
If it were me, I would go with Intel. Even if you don't need to transcode, at least the hardware capability will still be there with the Intel chip. And of course Intel has proven reliability on the Linux side of the house. Why the X and K models? Why not go with a lower TDP? Do you plan on trying to overclock? With the money saved, you could go for something like an i5-8400 instead. Lower TDP and more performance.
vdatanet 1549
Thanks, most likely I'll finally decide for Intel. The i5-8400 processor seems a good option. Now I am looking for the motherboard and I like the Gigabyte Z370 HD3. Does anyone use it with Ubuntu? I hope there are no problems with the drivers. vdatanet 1549
Finally I installed the new server with an Intel i5 8600 8th generation using Ubuntu 18.10 as the operating system, using the latest Emby beta version. The hardware transcoding has worked out of the box, without having to configure anything and the results have been amazing compared to my old NAS. I post them here if it is of interest: Transcoding 1 movie from 4K to 720p 3 Mbs, approximately 130 fps Transcoding 3 movies from 4K to 720p 3 Mbs, approximately 45 fps each I've not tested 4 movies, but I'm afraid the server could transcode a fourth movie more Edited January 14, 2019 by vdatanet

Always nice when things just work.
