User Groups or single logon with multiple profiles

In my house, I would like to see a User Profile selection similar to Netflix. Using my single logon, I would like my family to choose between who is watching.

That way each of us can watch shows without marking it watched for someone else.

In this scenario, I would have a 4 users in a Family Group using the same username/password.

Heh. Mothers and daughters can't be bothered to log out and log back in with their pass/pin. With Netflix, I stay logged in and they choose their respective profile at the launch screen.

Unless, I'm missing an easy wife-proof way of doing this.

This is via Roku, by the way.

Or, if you need to secure them for outside access, then provide passwords but use the "EasyPin" feature with a blank PIN and they can easily log in/out by just selecting their user when in-network.

Yea, I have no issue using this feature as is.  When you start the app it shows a few family names and the user just picks which user they are.  Some use a PIN and some don't.  Outside my home network they need to login with a username/password.

Works great, just takes a bit of setup for the users.

That was my concern... if they have no password. Does that mean remotely those users would not be prompted for authentication? Or are remote users always prompted for something?

I would also like this feature. My server is remote and I have a dynamic IP address at home. So I have to whitelist the new IP address my ISP grant me every week.

Also I'm not really keen on having my server local users's photo displayed to the public even though the accounts behind them are protected by a password.

This is the only thing I'm missing from Plex.

Heh. Moms and girls can't be tried to log out and log back in with their pass/stick. With Netflix, I stay signed in and they pick their separate profile at the dispatch screen.

Except if, I'm feeling the loss of a simple spouse confirmation method for doing this.

This is by means of Roku, incidentally.

Then instead of Emby Connect, why not setup your own DDNS, then you can give them the DDNS url instead of an IP address which you know is going to change.

Then they can login as their local Emby user that is managed on your server, and they'll be able to auto-login if that's what they want to do.

Please let us know if this helps. Thanks !

No you got it wrong. The Emby server is in a datacenter with a fixed IP address and accessible via a domain name. The users however are connecting from my home via an ISP with a dynamic IP they don't need to know the server address. The "local accounts" are on the Emby server in the datacenter. I don't use Emby Connect because I want to be able to select one user or the other from the Roku app like I do from my computer which save my main account credentials. But apparently the only way to have a user selection on the Roku app without having to enter the account password each time I launch the app is to have them as local accounts on the server and to whitelist my home IP address as belonging to the server local network in the advanced settings.

I tried to put the server behind http auth so that I can deactivate every local account passwords but the Roku app can't pass it using the ligin@password:sever.tld methid.

Any help appreciated!

Did you disable remote access for your users? Is that why they are not visible on the login screen?

They have remote access activated and I can see them but I need to enter their password each time. I obviously don't want to disable the passwords as the server is reachable to any one with the url.

What I think is missing in Emby is an additional level so that one accounts may have sub accounts attached to it. Like Netflix or Plex.

Yes but that only works for one account. If I want to switch to another account (on the same server) I need to input the applicable password.

@@Luke another way this could be done and add additional functionality would be to have a group login that has logins associated with it.  Then on each device you login with the group username/password and would get the list of accounts associated with that group account to choose from.

This would expand functionality because now I could have one group for my home as I have now, but could also create a group for my X-Wife's house with her login and my two kids and I could also create a group for the brother-in law (and his family with accounts) or for a close friend (and his family).

This way each "home" could have their own set of "local accounts" that can only be used for fast switching and we wouldn't be limited to just one set of quick change logins.  This would also solve part of the security issue the op is having as well.

We really need to avoid yet another different way to handle users...

I understand why you wouldn't want to do it but what we have now is lacking.  Quick change to other users only works in house right now and is only for one group of people.  It's not like Netflix where you can change users for others outside your home.

I get crap from my X all the time because she doesn't know how to switch their Rokus back from my son or daughters account to her own.  Probably once a week I get "the call" and have the same conversation with her how to logout and log back in again (feels like Groundhog Day movie). I get the same crap every time "Why can't we login like on Netflix and pick...".   Some people are just technology illiterate with some things and she's one of them!

Having some ability to do this using groups would solve this problem and wouldn't require caching multiple logins on a device.  But caching multiple logins on the device would be better than nothing.  At least I'd only have to set them up a few times (multiple devices) and would hopefully be done with Groundhog Day. :)

But one way or another it would be great to support multiple quick logins on devices outside your own LAN environment and for multiple groups of people.

So what I'm saying is what we need is just an easier way to switch users - not a whole new way of creating and managing users and logging on.
