Looking for Roku wiki volunteer

Hi team,

I think it might be nice to have a wiki article about how to setup the Roku with your server in the event the app is unable to locate it automatically. Basically a walk through with screenshots.

If anyone can help please post here, thanks.

Is there an sdk/emulator that would enable me to emulate different rokus and take screenshots that runs on a windows pc? If yes and am pointed to a styling guide/other wikis, I would be happy to.

Yup sure it is pretty easy.

Follow the instructions here > http://mediabrowser.tv/community/index.php?/topic/689-guide-to-installing-mediabrowser3-onto-the-now-tv-box/

to enable the dev mode.

Once you are there navigate to the screen you want a shot of on your roku. Then on the pc web page click on utilities and you will see the screenshot button click on that and the scr will appear underneath it save that image somewhere on your pc rinse and repeat.

Thanks for taking this on.

Cheers

Ok have found the server guide under tutorials, will use that style and create a post this weekend. Other than firewall block, if anyone has any other problems for setup worth including please say.

Ive enabled developer mode and taken screenshots.

However I think the roku prevents screenshots when inside a channel, unless the channel has been sideloaded so i cant take proper screenshots (to protect the developers copyright?), any ideas?

Dont have rights to create a post under tutorials, other clients.

Hmm that is something I didn't know.

If you can just start with Grants images I will supplement what you need (but it won't be until tomorrow) just let me know what you would like a scr of.

If you make it where you have created the thread them I will move it into the tute section once complete.

Please Supply Missing Images (Ideally consistent with an initial single server setup)

In order to build out the usage guide i will need to side load the application to get more screenshots, (it would take too long otherwise as i control the roku via the remote from upstairs/pc room and take screenshots as i go). If not, maybe the devs are better placed to provide usage guide in any case.

Please provide the port/protocol information for scan, manual add and normal playback..Not sure when UDP is used, not sure when web socket port number is used. not sure whats used during playback.

is client server agnostic, eg is mono supported?

Any ideas why jump to post links in chapters dont work?

ginjaninja, thank you for the work you've done on it so far. I went through and took a screenshot of every screen in the channel. Hopefully this will help you out.

You can grab all 53 images in the zip located here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/qod9nbkibbsj86f/screenshots.zip

Or browse and download each one individually:  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/tudkib2cwrt2qod/jwctBhv3ow

The files are named like "home1, home2, etc." are all of the homepage. "search" of the search screen, etc.

Not sure what you mean by the port/protocol information for scan. A user should only need to know about their running server's IP address (or hostname if using external server) and the port the server is running on. That information is located on the server's dashboard.

Yes the client doesn't care what the server is running on (windows, mono, etc.). It just depends upon connecting to a running server.

Not sure what your asking on chapters.

If you need anymore information or want to call it good just let us know. Thanks for your efforts so far.

Ty for pictures, will update next weekend.

Re. Ports and protocols

For connectivity troubleshooting it would be helpful to get a list of the network protocols in use from a dev eg during a scan..during a server connection..eg during playback. Its presumably not just a matter of http over tcp 8096 as presumably the roku client 'server scan' uses a udp broadcast? And when is the other port on config used?

Re chapter jump.

This is a query around the forum platform. I copy the post url for a section of the guide and apply to the chapter index in the 1st post. But when a user clicks they do not jump to the correct place.

The only two protocols it uses are just normal http of the server (on whatever port you have setup your server at, default is 8096) and the server scan uses a UDP broadcast on port 7359 (this is not something the user would ever need to enter into the Roku).

Oh you mean like anchor links? Not sure the best way to do that in the forums. I'll look into figuring that out or maybe Abo can answer it since he knows the forum software well.

Correct. The Roku client never uses the web socket port. Everything is over http and over the port you setup for the server (which most will be default wiih 8096).

The client always is requesting data at the moment. The server never initiates communications. That will change in the future, but for now that is true.

So web socket port number in server config 8945 by default is never used. All playback is over 8096.

Does client allways request playback / stream content...or does the server initiate communication with roku ever?
