Download woes

I just went to download a music artist to my phone for the first time in around a month to find downloads are now being handled individually by the native Android download manager causing a new notification+notification sound for every single item.

This is constantly interrupting the currently playing media.

Why has this changed? Is there anything that can be done about it?

We can look at how we're configuring the notifications, but we're using the native download manager because it's the most reliable way to download files on android. thanks.

Not for those of us that are still stuck with not being able to download to external storage

Adjust your notification settings for the emby downloads

While I can silence the notifications this way for now, the problem there is you can't filter out just embys downloads and silence them. You must silence the whole download manager regardless of which app queues downloads to it. It's just not a good long term solution.

I will say downloading through the native Android manager definitely went smother. It didn't spend a bunch of time 'preparing to download' it just did it.

Moving to the android manager has created another problem though:

Emby now saves files to:

/Android/data/com.mb.android/files/emby_downloads/

Whether that's on the SD card or internal doesn't matter, it's the same results and cannot be changed.

This means other apps cannot access this media at all.

For example, I use media monkey to watch/listen to my offline media. If I open media monkeys settings and attempt to add the above folder to the library it is not visible in the menus, you cannot access /Android/ at all.

Testing the same thing using VLC doesn't have this problem so this appears to be an issue with media monkey.

Being able to set a custom path would still be nice however.

Is this file path set in concrete now? It was in android/media/com.MB.android. I am concerned that stock android apps may not find music in these folders. I can test this weekend but it will take a while, I sync 4000+ flac files

I think there is some flexibility we can add so that you can choose among the pre-defined system folders that the app has access to. Unfortunately we can't just allow you to pick any arbitrary path because we can't guarantee that the android download manager will be able to write to them.

OK, so I have cleared out all of my music off of my phone, and tried to re-download. The first thing my luddite brain can't figure out is

1. I have everything set up for no converting, copy original file as is. The server spent 12+ hours converting files.

Now this is complete my phone is trying to download the playlist but failing. This worked fine the other day, directories have been created but I get this. (see image)

Hi @@Luke, I can't find any recent android log files, the last one was in february, so I removed/installed the emby android app but still no logs. I can confirm that it worked if I changed the destination to internal memory, and it was working to external a few weeks ago. This has always been the case with my Sony phones and the external memory (working/not working). I can confirm that it is creating directories for the files but not copying the files. I had a look at a server log file and found this in amongst the gibberish

I can get the last few server logs if needed

I hope this helps

I must learn to be clearer, It has been working for quite a while to external memory and I sync 4000+ flac files, when the android app was changed to  select either internal/external storage and use the download manager it worked but it changed the directory from the one I had set which was external storage/android/media/com.mb.android (I used this so stock music apps with no options to select a library folder would automatically find it), to external storage/android/data/com.mb.android which would be still OK as I only really use power amp which is quite configurable (and there is simply no better sounding app out there) and I could point it at that directory.

So for a tidy up and testing purposes I deleted all flac files and removed the download job from the server through the android app

I then reinstated the sync job which is a playlist that I have created for the sync purpose and as something that I can cast on shuffle to my Chromecast audio's (and now TV chromecasts have joined the multi room experience) when I am pottering about. I use my phone in the car and when running also on shuffle. This is the main way in which I use Emby. (I do also have a lot of T.V./films etc but that side of things is quite smooth)

Once I started the download of the playlist the server literally took 24hrs to "convert" nothing as I set music quality in the android app to unlimited and the download quality to original.

Now it is stuck "transferring" at 0% with the downloads failing on my phone for some reason but it definitely worked a few weeks ago. It has created folders on the external memory so seems to have permission to write.

Historically it's been a bit like this with the sync/download process to external memory from the Xperia Z, Z2, XZ premium, back in the earlier days of this function it would hang, then the app would update and downloads would spring into life. It has handled my mammoth playlist quite well and added files to my phone as I have added them to my playlist. I dare not open this playlist on any device though as it maxes out ram (with exception to the server PC which has 8gb). If i want to shuffle it to cast i open the playlist, hit shuffle and quickly back out before it initialises the actual list. It sometimes takes a few goes but usually works for hours. Sorry I digress.

This is why on another thread I mentioned sync favourites and shuffle favourites. I would love a true sync function so i can simply turn on and off what is on my phone by clicking the little heart, and I really miss the days of voice controlling "shuffle my favourite songs". But I am just one man in a plethora of emby users.

I once again hope this helps and I haven't drivelled on too much, give me a shout if you need clarification of my personal "code"

Cheers
