Dm3k1 0
Hello community, new Emby user here currently using a Linux Server on an old machine that just doesn't cut it (its an old single core AMD notebook type processor) for reliable streaming. Instead of continuing to hassle with my custom build I'm thinking of moving to a set and forget type solution. I am looking at the DS218j, mostly because it is affordable and is well reviewed. I'm wondering if anyone has experience related to its performance running an Emby server. I understand transcoding is probably beyond its capabilities but I assume for the most part that can be done client side? I will be primarily using an Nvidia Shield or Apple TV 4, or my computer while overseas. Only other things I plan on running on the DS218j is time machine for 2 computers, other than that it may be used as normal network storage for some files. Does anyone have experience with the DS218j or similar performing NAS, or have a good idea as to whether I can expect it to perform sufficiently for a normal user? Thank you in advance for your support!

FrostByte 5049
@@FrostByte is this the model that you have? No, I have a DS418play which has the upgraded Intel Celeron J3355 processor (same as the DS218+). I understand transcoding is probably beyond its capabilities but I assume for the most part that can be done client side? Transcoding is done by the server before streaming, not the clients. If I was you I would consider the DS218+ for transcoding purposes.

Thank you, not what I was hoping to hear but I’d rather get something that works rather than an expensive paperweight. Does the in between Play version support Emby? Looks to be situated directly between the plus and the j. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
FrostByte 5049
I think Emby can be installed on any of the 2018s (Luke may know better), it's just if you plan on doing a lot of transcoding you will probably be a lot happier with one with an Intel processor. https://www.synology.com/en-uk/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General/What_kind_of_CPU_does_my_NAS_have Edited November 19, 2018 by FrostByte
solabc16 379
Hello @@Dm3k1 All of the Synology models, except those based on the 'qoriq' processors, are actively supported : https://www.synology.com/en-uk/knowledgebase/DSM/tutorial/General/What_kind_of_CPU_does_my_NAS_have The key element to determine is whether you need transcoding support or not, based on your intended usage and format of your library. whosduhboss 0
If you have a shiled as you mentioned. I would recommend this. Set up your shield to be the server and the mount the Nas to the shield over the network. This will have the shiled do any of transcoding which it can do with no sweat. I don't have a Synology Nas I have a qnap and that's how I have it set up. I came here to see if there was any issues cause I may buy one in the future.
