jon_ 22
Hi All I've been using plex for a long time and have dabbled in Emby on and off for the last few years - I'm becoming more and more annoyed with the direction that Plex is heading, so I'm looking to drop it and migrate to Emby. One of the things I use a fair bit in Plex is the ability to sync content offline, and then play that synced content on a TV. I travel a lot with work, and normally travel with a FireTV stick. If I end up in a hotel with sucky internet, Plex allows you to use the mobile device as a local server, so you can browse and playback the content you have synced from another local device like a fire stick, or cast the local copy to a chromecast. I've seen that Emby has 'Play On' options via the cast icon, but a lot of the time it doesn't want to do anything (especially when you are browsing downloaded content). When it does work, it's streaming from the server, not the mobile device. Are there any native options for 'offline' playback of synced content on another device, or am I asking for something that doesn't exist? Thanks Jon
Luke 37008
Hi, this would require streaming from mobile device to TV. It's a great idea for the future. Thanks !
jon_ 22
Thanks - I was guessing that it wasn't implemented how Plex have done it (yet!). It works really well - the mobile device acts as a stripped down server (can serve basic content, but no transcoding etc) - but you can cast from your mobile direct to the TV with no requirement for a fast connection back to 'home', and on something like a fireTV you can browse content via the remote, see plot information, mark as watched etc etc
Luke 37008
Yes that's something we're considering for the future. Thanks.
jon_ 22
Actually - looks like I can work round it for the time being by using something like VLC as an external player and casting that to a chromecast. Not as nice as the remote driven fireTV, but looks like it will work
neik 835
This would be an awesome feature, especially when on travel. +
ct002695 0
That would be a fantastic addition. I tried to do just that over the Christmas holiday. I "sync'd" a number of movies to my tablet with the intention of Chrome Casting to a larger TV when away, only to find it can't cast (no device appear and the app just has the turning circle). I know Plex does allow this functionality but it would be great if Emby could incorporate something similar.
Luke 37008
I agree. Thanks for the feedback.
jon_ 22
As a workaround, use an external player - VLC can cast to chromecast, BubbleUPNP can cast to a FireTV (and the remote works for pausing etc).
jon_ 22
As an addition to my last comment - BubbleUPNP works well, and if you are using a FireTV, rather than casting directly to it via DLNA, install Kodi, enable it as a UPNP renderer (it's in the settings under services), then you avoid file incompatibilities with unsupported codecs etc. The FireTV doesn't seem to like files with AC3 soundtracks, this gets round that nicely
