Emby 3.0.111

Emby Serve 3.5.3.0-1 DS216play

Emby app, in the app any screen or line associated with movies, constantly refreshes the library and the background flickers colors between the normal color and and light gray.

You can select the file to play and it plays as it should.

I have a movie collection and the same behavior is there too.

Same behavior also happens when I stop scrolling on the LATEST Movies line.

It stops when I move up or down to another LATEST line,

This seems to have began after I FINALLY updated the server to 3.5.5.0-1.

I did try to turn OFF Backdrops but they will NOT stop displaying when I have them OFF.

This is not happening in Blue Neon, but I know that Blue Neon is a different BEAST.

Could be my ROKU ULTRA 2017 is going bad or an HDMI cord is going bad.

I did confirm that my cords all in nice and snug.

ESPN, Crackle, CBSN, alll seem to be working fine,

Server log is attached.

I Believe this is the texture cache being a problem. The Roku uses garbage collection routines to clean up texture cache when it runs low on memory. If you images are very large, and not being downscaled by the server prior, the app will retrieve these oversized images. This eats up the cache. In return, the cache clean causes a catch 22. It has to load the row again now, but it again runs into the problem of texture cache limits, and starts again and you see this as literally, flashing of the image.

To fix this, you need to make sure you have all the dependencies that Emby server requires in regards to image scaling. You can look in emby server logs and see if you any, lacking any produces errors in the log.

Also, we can fix this eventually in the Roku app. The app is requesting images at a certain size, but not loading them into texture memory reduced if you send full size images. This is the part we can fix. Where if you do send the app huge images, it can load these into texture memory after scaling. This will fix the issue for you in the app, but until then you can fix it by fixing the dependencies on your server. This may or may not be in your control.

I will follow back on this thread. This is marked as an issue in the tracker as high priority to fix. :)

Um, he's sick. My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass out at 31 Flavors last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

But seriously... yeah.. it's a known issue, and a .. bug. It's bugly. We intend to put that to rest eventually. It just takes time.

This problem is occurring due to the inability of your server installation to properly process and re-size images.  The image processing library is missing or not loading properly.

This causes the server to sent full-sized images to the app which the device simply cannot handle.

We will improve the app in the future to hopefully account for this but, right now, this is the problem you will see when your server cannot re-size images.

And lest I never forget who @@mikeraburn is.

In gaming parlance, for blue neon, he is my "whale". The one person who made the entire experience a fun one. Oh to have more like him. So to him there are certain things I cannot fail at. I will stand by his earlier help/consideration and just awesome attitude. This will get done. Now I cannot say when, really, I can't. Can't say how. Can't say by who. But I do know when I have more time this week. I will. It will be as soon as I get back to Ukiah and can thoroughly take serious time to chase issues.

@@mikeraburn

I spent the time so far on items where time could be valued more. On issues that had clear code and solveable rather quickly. Some require chasing in debug for hours to trace back where the logic fails. This is maddening when you can't find where the spanner is in the gears. Also, as you ready yourself to tackle one bug, suddenly without warning a major one even bigger regarding playback appears. You have to juggle your time accurately to best portray yourself as caring. I do care, I want to get this done. But it requires some steady/thoughtful work to be done on how images are loaded without missing a beat. It requires focus to add it all in without having to fight bugs you create in code you do. It also requires all this to be done at one time. Not split into sections at different times as you work on it. At once all the time devoted. You can/will mess up not doing it all at once to fix it.

I want to provide that immediate fix, but doing it here is difficult where I have small spans where I can work without my friends at their home with me. When I am alone here I can do this, and get time. When they are here, it is rude to just go away on them to a corner to my world. They are going through legal issues with a tenant who refuses to leave their home, and they can't move in on the move in date. And it's almost over. Once that is, I can go back to what I was doing, and to where I live to my house, and await their next court case and appearance to give legal help/advice. I am their only hope so to speak. Their Obi-Wan of the Sacramento Unlawful Detainer division. That's one of my several hats this week. So never fear, we will get there. You are special to me, and I keep that as a promise to you that your issues are important to me. Personally.

Geeze speechles,

You brought tears to my dusty old eyes.

It seemed odd to me that this just started when I did the synology servers latest update AND this is not happening in Blue Neon.

I am grateful I do not suffer from epilepsy, as the flashing would certainly trigger a seizure.

The issue is related to the image processing capabilities of the server so that is not odd at all.  The update has caused your image processing to not be working.  Can't say exactly why but some Linux systems have trouble with the image libraries we use.

I "fixed" my issue, but others with this issue may not have the same luxury I have.

I moved all my movies to my WIN10 machine upstairs on an SSD.

I now have a sever dedicated to just movies.

It pays to horde computer parts, old systems, etc.

Force DIRECT anytime soon???

If I am the only yahoo that keeps bringing it up then I really see no reason for it to be added.

I do have a handful of files that Emby beta will not play at all.

They won't even transcode.

I swap to Blue Neon and use Force Direct and they play.

I even took a few of the files and tossed them on a stick to see if they would play on the Ultra 2017 using the Roku media player.

They did.

Once I get through this 8 season batch of files that are goofy, will I ever re-watch them?

Probably not.

Can you give us one of those files?

I wonder if this is another issue with the SG player vs. the old one.

Its the freakin' subtitles. They are embedded as ASS/text.

The Roku can technically, play these directly and scrub out html attributes too. But this isn't added into the capabilities for subtitles yet. Only srt is. subrip and ass are also supported. Perhaps we should include these? @@ebr?

hehhe.. ass.. heh...um.. yeah..I am as always saying aim high. Once you get there, aim higher. Never is anything good enough. There is always room to do better. There is always room to improve. Never assume you are there or get comfortable. Any playback issues are an immediate priority. #1. Numero Uno. Ichibahn. These are showstoppers and break the "magic" intended. These types of things must be fixed immediately or you risk your.. reputation. This is damage control jumping on these like a panther. Some may say they care. While others actually do. You can tell the two apart night and day. We aren't them. "Them" being the company who are always so neglectful of their userbase. They want you to bow to them. We want you to be happy.

JUST got an update.

Thank you guys very very much!

Please report back if your ssa/ass subtitles now cause a transcode or not? We try. We may need to try again. You decide. If it transcodes we still have work to do.

Hey, +1 on seeing this.

I have a Win10 box running latest 3.5.3 emby where both our Rokus connect fine. The Win10 box reads the media from shares on a Synology NAS (DS1517 running latest updates for Synology DSM OS). It's.... just worked for ages with no issues.

Because I'm trying to reduce down the amount of computers I use (and my electric bill), I got emby 3.5.3.0-16 installed onto my Synology DS1517, and added a few movie files to a test library, and I see this exact issue. Connect my Rokus back to my Win10 emby server, and I get the disco flickering exactly as described in the first post of this thread. I worked *extensively* with solabc16 (who was a gosh darned hero and patient as heck) as we worked through some issues with the Synology Emby server.

I just deleted and re-added the Emby channel on both of my Roku's (and they've been restarted) and they both still exhibit the flickering. Just... a data point, I know you guys are working hard on so many issues, but I'd love to know if there's a rough ETA :)

Thanks you guys for all the hard work!

Sorry if I wasn't clear!

  • Works fine: Roku --> Windows Emby Server --> Reading media from shares on Synology DS1517
  • Flickering as described in this thread: Roku --> Emby running on Synology DS1517 (same synology as used above)

Same Rokus will work fine talking in first scenario. Flickering on Rokus appears in second scenario.
