Hi,

Since a week or so now Emby has been loading sooooo slowly (up to at least 2 minutes) on my two devices (Shield and RPi3) which results, I think, in it sometimes not even loading the subtitles correctly.

Turning on/off subtitles or switching to the next one doesn't even work then and I'm forced to download new ones.

I think the problem would be solved if it would load fast again, but I can't figure out what it is.

Help?

Do you have your Kodi log? Are you transcoding? Did you update your server recently? I don't think I've changed anything that would effect playback speed.

I think it's transcoding, but I'm not sure (it's set to add-on mode, with HTTP selected).

Also, it's grabbing things from my PC which hasn't been updated for a while now. I haven't actually updated anything, the only thing I did was install some games which shouldn't affect things. And Emby auto-updated itself naturally.

Here's the RPi Kodi log: https://paste.kodi.tv/ovocuherev

Try disabling external subtitles in the addon settings > playback. Not sure if that will fix your issue, let me know.

Tried it but it didn't work. I rebooted both devices and somehow it seems to work fine now. Weird. I'll get back to you if it happens again :)

Well, I thought it was fixed but after a full day of the systems running the problem is back. Rebooting fixes it, but after about a full day it's super-superslow again :(

Could it be because of the updates it's trying to grab/install? I noticed that the app was updated with an auto-update system?

What app is auto updating?

The Emby Kodi app? I get messages/notifications that an update has been applied? Never had that before.

What if you direct stream instead of transcoding? Is it also slow? (I can't load your initial log on my phone it seems) set the video quality back to the default value to guarantee direct streaming.

Ah. You are on 3.1.21a? Playback hasn't changed since 3.1.12 so I doubt this is the issue.

I actually tried that on the Shield but somehow it couldn't play any of my files because it couldn't find them (the locations). I have \\IP paths so I have no idea what the problem there is. I finally set it back to add-on mode and then it worked again. So weird.

Addon playback can bypass path issues. Sounds like your shield is unable to access your share. Navigate to install from zip > smb > to your content. Does it work? It's possible Kodi will ask for network credentials.

Finally fixed it (the network issues), and it starts movies and episodes straight away using direct mode, no loading at all.

I have the same problem and it started for me around the same time as the OP mentioned. I believe it started when the Emby server was updated to version 3.5.3.0 which was on September 21st. Nothing else changed on the system or in the network.

If I restart Kodi, the delays are gone and then they come back after a while. I have no network issues. The Emby server is on the same computer as Kodi and the content is on a NAS. When the delay happens and the content starts, the Emby dashboard says it's direct playing. I have no issues starting content in Emby from the web interface.

My system is running Windows 10.

I'm using Direct playback now which works right away and without any loading. In Add-on mode the problem remains. I prefer this way really, but it used to stutter badly so I hope that problem is solved for me now, otherwise I'm forced to return to Add-on mode.

I have the same issue

I’m using a shield, gigabit wired and direct playback

Most files take over 2mins before playback commences

Restarting shield doesn’t seem to help me

I’m hoping this may be fixed soon as the Kodi interface is a lot easier and customisable that Embys Android front end

Yes hopefully fixed soon, Seems to happen after 2 or 3 shows watched then gets extremely slow loading or fails completely

I tried direct play and didn't seem to make any difference

It did for me fortunately, but I did notice the add-on itself still responds very slowly when using direct play (especially when trying to visit the Settings). It takes a whole lot longer than usual.

Let me know if the issue goes away with 3.1.22.

Gonna test it a little longer but seems to work fine so far :)

Sorry to say that it remains very, very slow after a while of running things :(

yeah mine is still slow. not as bad as it was but  still getting slow after a while

Then, can you provide a new log like I asked here? https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/63332-gets-slower/?p=630037

Much appreciated.

I would but I'm running with Direct play now and the issue right now only occurs when trying to access Emby in general (like visiting the Settings, loading takes up to a minute or so) or when it has to change the watch status, which takes even longer than that (up to several minutes).

I don't see any such delays on my side... Can you do what I asked, but capture the watched status action, etc?
