Emby for Kodi - Download movie to local storage

Hi everyone,

I'm sorry if this has already been asked: I've lurked through the latest forum posts and tried a few searches, but couldn't find an answer.

When using Emby on an Android device, I have the opportunity to download a (possibly transcoded) file to the on-device storage in order to view it later, without an Internet connection.

I'd like to do the same with Emby for Kodi.

I have an RPi box with Emby for Kodi on it that I use to keep access to my library on any TV when I'm away from home. However, I still need to have an Internet connection for it to work. Or I need to download the movies I intend to watch to a USB key and add that to the sources of the kodi install (which I do, indeed). I'd love to be able to mark movies in Kodi for download, wait a bit and then be able to unplug the device, watch my movies whenever and have the "watched" status updated next time I'm connected.

Is this feature already available ? If not, would it be hard to implement ?

Thanks in advance !

That feature is not available... I don't know how hard it would be to implement. I'll add it to my list of potential FR, but no promises.

If you consider making this possible, it would be awesome if the files would be saved encrypted on the devices. To prevent the users giving away the files to a third party

How would that work? How would Kodi then read the file?

For sure Emby for Kodi has to be able to decrypt it then :-)

Sorry, I‘m aware that this is a hard approach, but that should be the way to go IF that feature should be implemented at all.

@@ddurdle s gdrive for Kodi addon has the ability to decrypt video files, maybe he can advise you.

So the addon would download, encrypt. Then decrypt before playback? Sorry I am not familiar with this, but I'll do research. No promises that any of this will be added.

I intend on extending the Emby on KODI plugin via a fork submission to enable downloading the video for offline viewing if it is a STRM video.  It should work similarly for non-STRM files, but may need to adjust the logic.

Well, I'm not so sure about the whole "encryption" thing.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Emby has a setting to enable/disable the download feature for each user. I think to keep things simple, Emby for Kodi should simply allow this "caching" feature to be used when the download authorisation is granted, which would not require any encryption work and still not introduce any hazard for people mindful of their media protection.

I hope that makes sense, and I thank you for even considering the possibility !

Why would encryption be needed? How would a third party access your files on your Raspberry Pi? Just encrypt the system partition and any other partitions instead?

Besides; if you only encrypt the media files, logs etc. are still accessible. So everyone would still be able to see what you played and when, just not access the files themselves. It would be very strange to only encrypt the media files and not everything else if you're afraid of privacy issues....

This doesn't seem necessary at all. I can't see any scenario where this would be useful in any way.
