Low volume webclient, direct streaming

I am experiencing low audio issues when playing all audio via the web client. Some streams are transcoding while others are direct stream. I have done some research but the only thing that turns up is the "transcoding > audio boost" setting which should not apply in my case since my source audio is 2.0 AAC and often not transcoding anyway.

 

When I watch a trailer via the Emby webclient (YouTube) the volume is much higher than any played stream, same with playing the file locally via VLC for example. In general, any audio that is not played in the Emby webapp (except Youtube) is of higher volume.

 

• Emby Server 3.5.2.0 (armhf, raspbian on Raspberry Pi)
• Web client
• Stream: DirectStream, MKV, .H246 High, audio AAC LC 192kbps, 2 channels, rate 48000 Hz
• Web clients: Ubuntu (Chrome), Ubuntu (Firefox) MacOS (Safari)

 

Considering the source file seems okay, can it be an issue with the webclient? The audio slider seems a bit funky to mee sometimes, it often starts at 86 and hard to move to 100. The slider seems sticky to the cursor a bit.

I would check the volume assigned to the browser in your operating system. If it is direct playing there's not much we can do.

Everything (master volume, chrome application volume) is at 100%. YouTube played in the Emby Web client, without changing any settings, plays at a noticable higher volume than streamed media.

@@cayars have you seen this in the web app? I can't seem to reproduce this.

@@christianberkman can you tell us a bit of the source of a file you experience this with?  Did you rip it or record it or get it through other means?

Did you process the file in any manner?

What audio streams are in the file?

Was it playing louder on a previous build of the server?

 

Have you recently gotten any Windows updates specifically audio driver updates?

Browser updates?

 

Have you tried to play these back in another browser or even another computer using a broswer?  What's you volume like in Chrome, Opera, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Edge?  Basically try one or two other than what you normally use to see if they play louder or not.

 

I ask some of these questions because some people process their files and create AAC from 5.1 or better sound tracks creating a stereo track.  However if not done correctly you basically get the left and right track but not the center tracks which makes the volume much lower since you've lost part of the audio.

 

If you have a device connected to your TV.

When you play back the same movies or TV shows that come only from your Emby system is the sound roughly about the same?  Say 25% on the TV volume wise?  Do you constantly have to adjust the volume on the TV when you play different movies as some are soft and others loud?

 

It could just be that Youtube is optimizing (normalizing) the sound because they know a lot of people play video back on PCs and the sound is low so they boost it.  Thus local media sounds lower compared to Yourtube video.

 

Tons of reasons and we just need to try and narrow it down to diagnose.
