I'll recheck Luke, but I was pretty sure the last time I streamed a MKV with atmos I got dolby digital instead.

From what I have read it is a Roku limitation right now, nothing Emby can do..

 

 

Roku Tech Support verified that not even the Roku Ultra 2017 model supports any HD bitstream passthrough at this time through HDMI. So you are only getting DD+ or DTS. Roku cannot pass Dolby TrueHD or Dolby Atmos, nor can they pass DTS-MA or DTS-X at this time until they support HD bitstream passthrough.

Atmos is metadata on top of another format, in your case lossless TrueHD. The Roku cannot bitstream TrueHD to a receiver. Vudu uses Atmos on top of lossy Dolby Digital Plus, which the Roku can bitstream.

Is this a new rokuTV model produced in the last month by TCL or another vendor? I have heard of a few that support both DolbyVision and Atmos. In that case, yes, that rokuTV should show support for atmos in the device.getAudioDecodeInfo

 

Now for the problem anyone have that TV care to disclose their audiodecodeinfo here? You can see it when using the Blue Neon Night app. In the app, navigate to the Options and QuickViews row. Scroll to the right until you see a big question mark with a circle around it. Under it says "Device Info". Click that and scroll to the bottom. Notice where it says the [Audio Decode Info] bits? Is there some way you can take a screen shot of that with a camera or similar? Seeing that will expose what that model is capable of. Near the top of the device info is about your specific device. Note the model, modelNumber, and VendorName those may help identify it.

 

If you still think Atmos should direct play do a test. In blue neon, on the detail screen choose "more..." and choose "force direct". Now play the video and see if you hear anything. Or is it, the sound.. of silence?

All of the above are known as ndka. Native Development Kit apps. They can write their own drivers, their own codec engines, their own players. They have access to the linux core of the device at the lowest level.

Here is emby and the emby beta. Using the roku scene graph apps. These cannot extend what the roku lets you do. You have to pay roku, several tens of thousands of dollars and sign large NDA agreements filled with clauses that cause huge lawsuits against you to get NDK access. So at that level, you pay to play. In this case, emby isn't paying to play that game. Using dollars must make sense, or lose both dollars and cents.

Sorry, have the 4K roku ultra. Are you saying that their vudu app is only playing lossy dolby when my receiver shows atmos?? If so that pisses me off.

Well, technically, they cheat. They aren't using lossless trueHD and mapping atmos on top. Which is what you hear on the theater and encoded on bluray.

 

They use a technique to hand deliver the atmos to the app as it is playing. So they use Dolby Digital+ instead of trueHD and throw your atmos mappings on top.

 

In effect you get your 7.1 but, with the (noticeable? Do you notice it?) degredation. Most people probably just want sound out all the speakers and compression is unknown to them. You might be able to spot the compression.

They need a 1-up on the competition. Part of that is HD audio, but knowing the Roku cannot do that they did the best they could with what was given them. So even though, technically they are cheating, its dishonest, WTF.. be real... You gotta at the same time think, well, it does make them look like they can do something no other app on roku can do. While at the same time wondering.. so why aren't other apps doing this that get the same NDK access? Because Sony didn't push them to do it. Blame Sony for the entire problem of wanting 7.1 on every device that uses Vudu when their films play. Sort of the same way Sony forced the service to adopt 4k, and then only for certain Sony titles. Sony always threatens to pull its entire catalog off Vudu if it doesn't get its whims.
