Ad-skip does not work with PlayOn plugin

When a file recorded by PlayOn with 'ad-skip' is played back with PlayOn, advertisements are skipped as desired.  However, when the same file is played back through the PlayOn plugin in Emby, advertisements are not skipped.  If the PlayOn plugin for Emby is just a front-end for PlayOn, why would the same player playing the same file not skip the advertisements?  The frame numbers for the beginning and end of each commercial are listed in the header of each PlayOn recorded file (see attachment).  This is different than commercial endpoints being listed in a separate .edl file as produced by Comskip, so software designed for Comskip does not work.  For persons using PlayOn to exclude ads, this shortcoming is a significant matter.  snazy2000 said that this is an Emby issue, not a PlayOn plugin issue, so a new thread needed to be started.

Hi, the only way this is going to work is if PlayOn feeds emby a video stream with the commercials already removed. There's no support for taking a list like that and slicing them out.

It sounds like PlayOn is not doing that. In this case, snazy2000's assessment is not correct.

No, because of what I just said. Playon probably passes the full video along with a list of commercial times that the front end is supposed to strip out.

But that has never been promised or advertised. Emby is not a front end for playon. Snazy2000s plugin is more of a provider to import playon content into emby, but that does not mean you'll be getting every play on feature. What you will get from the plugin is what is listed on the plug-in info page, which is basic playback.

It is clear that I am confused about the PlayOn plugin.  After reading your post, I am even more confused.  You say that "Emby is not a front end for playon."  Also, that "What you will get from the plugin is what is listed on the plug-in info page."  Okay, the plugin info page for PlayOn says, "The Plugin is juts(sic) a front end for the service."  This is why I expected it to be a front-end and use the PlayOn player which skips commercials.  As I now understand it, this is all false.  Is this correct?

Sorry, yes, I can see how that description could be confusing.

This is a 3rd-party plug-in developed by a community member.  All it does is make your PlayOn content available in the Emby library.  At that point, the content is streamed just like any other Emby content and played in a variety of players depending on exactly which app or platform you are accessing it from.

I just edited it to remove that line from the description and updated to say that ad-skipping is not supported.

I will ask snazy2000 to further revise the page about what is supported and what is not. Thanks.

Okay, thanks.  Emby is certainly super for live TV.  However, if I must divert to other software every time I want to watch recorded files while skipping the chapters marked in their headers as "Advertisements" or use other software in advance of viewing to strip files of commercials and re-record them for Emby, then Emby has lost much of its appeal.  The most difficult task is identifying the commercial segments.  When these  locations are already known and embedded in file headers, it makes no sense to throw this work away and suffer through watching commercials.  Maybe someone in your user community can create a front-end to implement the PlayOn player or adapt another player that skips commercials on the fly during the playback of recordings.  (Obviously, coordination with transcoding would require consideration.)
