Xbox One S/X - HDR file looks rubbish when streamed in SDR.

When I play an 4K HEVC file with HDR in Emby Theater the colours and contrast are all blown out.

I have two TVs in different rooms, each connected to an Xbox one S/X running Emby Theater. One TV is 4K HDR, the other is 1080p SDR.

I know Emby Theater for Xbox One is currently not able to stream HDR, and when this is fixed I will no longer have a problem on the 4K HDR TV; however the problem will presumably remain on the 1080p SDR TV.

The Xbox One happily downscales to 1080p itself, so it's just the HDR causing issues.

I would like to be able to view these videos on the 1080p SDR TV without having to have a separate 1080p SDR version of the video, is this even possible?

Note: when I play the original Ultra HD HDR bluray disc in an Xbox connected to a 1080p SDR TV that the colours and contrast appear correct, but a remux played through Emby Theater has the blown out colours and contrast.

Thanks

We'll need to make sure these get transcoded to SDR when required. Thanks.

@@Luke, so no way to strip the HDR without transcoding? For some reason I thought it they were meant to be backwards compatible.

If the server isn't transcoding then it's the xbox that would have to be able to handle it.

@@Luke when you play the original UHD disc on an SDR TV via the Xbox it appears to strip the HDR and the picture looks normal, so it looks like the Xbox can do it - just not via Emby Theater (unless the original disc has extra tracks/streams/info that allows this that a remux doesn't?).

Thanks

@@Luke I was thinking that since the Xbox strips the HDR and downscales an original UHD disc on it's own for a 1080p SDR TV, maybe it will do the same for 3rd party apps (like Emby) once the UWP platform defect that is preventing HDR (even on a compatible TV) is fixed.

Maybe better to leave it not transcoding until the UWP defect is fixed and see what the Xbox One does on it's own.

Thanks
